Evelyn
"How's the weekend going?" Yasmine's call wakes me up at eight AM.
"Good." I sit back against the headboard and rub my sleepy eyes.
"One word answer. That isn't good."
"I'm being honest. Last night we had a hiccup. But except that it's been nice."
"What happened last night?"
The sigh leaves my mouth as I think back to last night. "Nothing big. I asked Warren something because I felt like it was bothering him. But he didn't share it with me. Which is fine. I don't mind."
You mind that a lot. My heart screams at me.
"Seems like you do." Yasmine and my heart would be best friends.
"Okay fine. I do, a little. But only because I know it matters to Warren."
"Give him time. He'll tell you."
"You're right. Lately, we have been opening up. I feel like I'm falling back into the same pit it took me ten years to crawl out of."
"Love is worth falling for."
Before I know I speak. "I think so too."
"You're falling in love with him, Evelyn."
Shaking my head with a smile I say. "I don't think I ever stopped. He's been my first and only love."
"I'm happy for you."
"I know."
Yasmine and I talk about my weekend. I delve into the details but keep some moments to myself.
I direct the conversation toward her and Connor and I'm elated to hear her working things out with him. It's difficult for both of them to be with each other and constantly fight their insecurities and fears. But I know their feelings are strong and real.
Once the call ends, I pack my suitcase as we leave in the evening. After a long hot shower, I change into a purple summer dress and apply minimal makeup.
When I reach the kitchen I find a note on the island.
Out on a run. I'll be back in an hour.
– Warren
I turn to the stove to make breakfast instead of wallowing in sadness. I make pancakes and devour them with maple syrup. I'm not a tea lover, but today, I make a cup for myself. Chamomile works like a wonder on my troubling nerves.
I call Ivan and chat with him for a while. He's eager to know the details of our getaway but is patient with whatever information I give him. Next up is Michael who greets me and cuts the call short due to work.
Sitting outside on the patio I look up at the vibrant blue sky that appears different from the city. It's so clean and rich in color. Patches of clouds scatter over the canvas like fallen leaves in autumn. Birds chirp in the trees and I observe the foliage robustly taking over nature. The leaves are various shades of yellow, orange, and red; painting the forest in a medley of colors.
I inhale the fresh air and feel it cleansing me from the inside.
The conversation with Yasmine from earlier loops around my mind like a marathon track. I'm overlooking everything between Warren and me.
There's no doubt his charms have worked over me once again. He's got me exactly where he wanted me to be. Falling for him. Much harder and stronger than the last time.
