On my way I buy two bottles of cheap wine and arrive at Yasmine's place. She lives with her mom outside the city in a nice big house with a picket fence. Her house looks dreamy and feels like home.
I texted Ivan to come.
By the time I pull up at her house it's two in the morning, and I'm emotionally tired and physically numb. Yet still I can hear my heart aching in excruciating pain.
The lights are on as I make my way to the door. Before I can knock, it opens, and my two best friends look at me and pull me in a hug.
I let the tears stream down my face.
Miles goes frantic beside me and I try to calm him down, but he's not having it. Sitting on the couch in the living room I pull him on my lap and rub his fur in long slow strokes.
"Where's your mom?" I ask Yasmine.
"She's with Aunt Riley for the weekend."
I nod and put the bottle on the table.
Ivan and Yasmine sit across from me and pour wine into the glasses.
"So I guess this is the occasion you were always talking about." Ivan smirks.
"Cheap wine at two AM with a story from the past filled with love and heartache." Yasmine whispers in a dramatic tone.
"You guys are insane." I smile a little.
"But you love us." Ivan says.
With a sigh I nod feeling like the weight of the world is falling on my shoulders.
"I met Warren in junior year of highschool. He moved schools and was the new kid. Everyone went crazy about him. From boys to girls everyone wanted to be his friend."
I sip some wine and look down at Miles who's staring off at something.
"My best friend Violet had a crush on Aaron who quickly became Warren's friend along with Ryan. Violet was excited to get closer to Aaron and talk to him. So a week later she dragged me to their table during lunch and made me sit with Warren so she could be closer to Aaron. We didn't talk much. But when lunch was over I went to the dustbin to throw away a juice box and missed it. Warren picked it up and threw it away. That was our first meeting."
"How romantic." Yasmine smiles big.
"Romantic? It's nothing. Remember it's just the beginning of a vicious heartbreak." Ivan reminds her to which Yasmine rolls her eyes.
Ignoring them I continue the story. "We shared classes so ultimately we became friends. We talked about music, books, people, food and so much more. If we got invited to parties he'd find me in my quiet corner and we'd spend time together, sometimes we even danced to the trashy rap music." Tears fill my eyes but I refuse to allow them to fall down.
Ivan and Yasmine don't interrupt.
"Three months later I fell in love with him, and I'm pretty sure he did too. But we didn't tell each other. He was my first kiss, first touch and first feelings. Everything was going great until Aaron and Violet had a fight and he insulted her in front of the whole school."
Bitter memories from the past catch up to me even though there's a ten year distance. I almost choke under their tight hold around my neck.
It's okay. You've moved on.
Apparently I haven't. Just like Warren said.
"She grew bitter and cold after that. She would make comments about me and Warren and fill my ear with things like "he isn't good for you, you should get away from him. He's dangerous. He doesn't want a relationship, that's why he hasn't asked you.' The reason why Warren and I weren't dating was because we wanted to focus on ourselves and also keep our friendship. Despite the fact we kissed and fooled around quite a few times. But it felt good and safe. Exactly how it's supposed to feel like."
