Evelyn
"I think we should hire someone else to be our designer. I have a few people in mind. You can look at the resumes and let me know." Beth eagerly places a Manila folder on my desk.
"There won't be any need for that. Jessica is more than capable and I like her designs."
"Jessica is a teenager. You need a skilled and experienced person for the job if you want to excel in the near future." She addresses me with a curt tone.
"The clients have been happy with her work and a few have also praised her. So it doesn't matter that she's young and lacks experience. Her skills are outstanding."
Her lips thin at my reply and she eyes me with a certain dislike.
I don't know what I've done for her to grow such feelings for me. Perhaps it's because Warren moved her from his prestigious company to mine and the new environment is different.
Often Yasmine and Ivan play music in the office while we all work. There have been instances when we've danced as a group just for the fun of it. And those have been my favorite moments.
We're all grown-ups in our twenties, dealing with life and family. Sometimes all you need is a break from the problems to recharge your spirit.
"Warren assigned me to hire people and make decisions that'll benefit your company." Beth's posture straightens.
"Listen, Beth, I know you want the best for this company, but at the end of the day this is my company, and no one is leaving this place without my permission. Mr. Archer knows that."
"I understand." With an attitude, she takes the folder from the table and walks out of my office.
A minute later Yasmine strolls into the room."What was Medusa saying?"
Apparently, Ivan and Yasmine have given Beth that nickname due to her cold behavior and the way she wants to destr— change things around here.
"She wants me to fire Jessica and hire someone else."
Yasmine takes a seat and picks up my stapler.
"That bird!" Bitch. Curse words are reserved for special occasions.
"Don't call her that. She's too stuck up to be a bird." We both share a smile.
"You aren't thinkin—"
"Nope. Jessica is my favorite. I'm not letting her go. You've seen her work. She's great at designing. I don't need anyone else."
"I know. I think she'll try to replace us all by the end of the year and have her people work here."
"I won't let that happen. She can try whatever she wants but none of you are leaving this place. You're my favorite people." Yasmine smiles and the color of her lipstick complements her white dress.
"Before you say anything else. I want you to know I love your dress. And it looks so good on you." With a giggle, her eyes twinkle.
"Thank you. My mom bought it for me." Just like that sadness washes over me and takes away the joy.
"That's so sweet." I smile to hide my despair.
Yasmine doesn't notice the mask I slip on. The last thing I want to do is talk about my mother. The subject is still too fresh.
"I think you should talk to Mr. Archer about this matter. He'll listen to you."
And just like that, the sorrow is replaced by anger.
