"So how are things with Evelyn?" Connor eats the croissant while giving me a watchful stare.

"Perfect."

"Good. You deserve that."

My heart warms at his comment. "You deserve that too. How are things with Yasmine?"

A heavy sigh escapes him and I just know he'll have a loaded response. "We're having fun. The kind I've never had with any other woman before. She's fucking perfect. But it's not her. It's me. I'm the problem who'll lead us downhill."

Taking a sip of my coffee I give him a pointed look. "As long as you believe that, you will."

He freezes, and his gaze on me leadens with surprise. "Did you just give me relationship advice?"

Concealing my cheeky smile I nod. "I've got your back like you got mine."

"Holy shit. Evelyn is changing you."

"Maybe," I whisper.

"Yasmine makes it so easy to love her. Especially for me, as I thought I'd never be able to experience love ever again. Do you think you can fall in love twice or maybe even more than that?"

"Depends whether you want to or not."

"I guess. I always thought there was only one true love. The kind you have with Evie."

"I think we have that because we never let go of each other. I mean I haven't. I don't know about her."

Scoffing at me he finishes the last bit of his croissant. "You're stupid if you think she doesn't love you."

There are moments when I believe she loves me. But there's doubt too, because I've caused her tremendous pain. All the stuff that she told me about her mental breakdowns have me choking on endless thoughts. I hate myself for adding pain to her misery and driving her to take her own life.

That makes me certain that she won't fall in love with me. Even if she did in the past.

It's difficult to look past pain for the sake of love. I've been there. So I know.

"How can you say she loves me?" I ask.

Connor doesn't waste a second diving into the details. "The woman glows up when you're in the same room as her. Like her eyes lit up by seeing you. And from what I've heard from Yasmine and Ivan, Evie is a guarded woman. Much like you. But when she's with you I see her smiling and laughing. And let's not forget the gifts you got for her from Paris. She's always wearing the necklace, rings, and perfumes. That says something especially when she claims to hate you." Pinning me with his earthy eyes he continues. "She loves you. Trust me on that."

Swallowing down the last sip of my coffee I look out of the cafe he dragged me to. According to Connor, I've been working strenuously for the past week. And he thought a lunch break at a small cute cafe would take the stress off my shoulders.

I don't give Connor an answer and he doesn't fish for one.

After talking for another fifteen minutes we leave for work. Kenna efficiently organizes the queues of meetings I have to go through which takes up most of my afternoon. By the time night rolls outside, I'm still wrapping up.

Ordering another cup of coffee I return to my office only to have Kenna rush in. "Sir, these documents need your signature."

Standing beside her I skim over the content and then sign as she flips the pages.

"Do you want anything for dinner, sir?"

My eyes glance at her. "No."

I'm about to sit on my chair when she speaks again. "I can get your usual from Altura."
