Evelyn
"I need a boyfriend," I announce.
"No," Yasmine instantly replies.
"Yes," Ivan agrees with a grin.
My assistant shoots him a glare and then turns her gaze back at me.
"Why do you need a boyfriend?" Her hazel eyes study me.
"Because I almost kissed Warren four days ago." Admitting that makes my stomach fill with butterflies. Very strange.
"What?!" They yell in unison.
Miles looks up at us from the couch and wags his tail and barks.
"Well, I..."
Both of my friends lean over the table in interest.
"We were talking and one thing led to another and I ended up straddling him. Our faces were close and we were going to kiss but he stopped it."
"Oh my fucking God." Yasmine fans her face with a silly grin.
"What the actual fuck?" Ivan exclaims with a tight expression on his face.
The two of them are showcasing such different emotions that I'm torn between what to decide.
"Look, guys, I need a rebound guy. I need to do something. I can't feel like this toward...him." That last part makes my mouth go dry.
"You're right." Ivan rubs his chin.
"No, Evelyn." Yasmine watches me with wide eyes.
"You guys know we have history. Really bad history. I can't just let him pull me into the same thing I went through the first time. I don't have the strength to endure another heartbreak."
"But I don't believe Warren is here to hurt you," Yasmine says.
"Yasmine shut up. The guy is our enemy. Stop picking his side," Ivan is quick to counteract.
"I will pick his side until the end because I know what it feels like when you lose the person you're meant to be with because you were busy fighting him. Once he's gone, you're left meeting these other strange men who don't hold up to him. You don't feel anything when you're on a date and they're holding your hand. Or when they kiss you or they're inside you. Your mind and heart keep reminding you of him and it's fucking impossible to go back because now he's just gone."
Silence walks on a tightrope as it balances between chaos and quiet.
Ivan and I are too stunned to move a muscle let alone speak a word. He and I both have witnessed Yasmine searching for love but she's been...stuck.
My heart feels heavy with guilt for not asking her about herself. I should have.
"Noah West asked you on a date right?" Yasmine asks in a grave tone that has my spine straightened.
I only nod in response.
"Go on a date with him. You'll see that love isn't easy to find when you're already in love with someone else."
Standing up she leaves the room and closes the door with a loud thud. The walls shake due to the impact but then an eerie silence expands in the room.
"That was deep," Ivan whispers.
"You pushed her too far, Van," I say.
"I didn't know okay. I...gosh fuck. She's my best friend. I should apologize to her."
"You should. You hit a painful nerve."
"I know, Eve. I'm feeling so bad."
Pursing my lips I gesture for Miles to come to me and he does. Taking him into my lap I lean my head on his warm coat. I sigh as if the world is sitting on my shoulders.
