*Veronica's POV*
I don't think I am the only one having a hard life anymore. I've been thinking that Vince and Adrian forgot they were texting in the chat that me and Andy were in, which brought my attention to what was going on with their grades. Vince and Adrian were getting angry and frustrated that their grades have gone down to C's and D's even though they have been doing their homework and did very well on their tests. This is mainly when Andy started to text more frequently, and mostly about the grades since it was affecting him too. Thank god they didn't question me, even though they do mock me for how my grades are, especially Vince. They did mention that their grades dramatically dropped and talked to their teachers about it who agreed to change it as soon as they can, even though I think I know the real answer.
I could not wait to confront Max. From what I heard on the group chat the boy's parents are getting away. Luckily I was able to convince my math teacher to let me stay in to rest my head since I have been "tired."
"Max?" I shouted, knowing no one would hear me over people in the hall ways laughing and talking.
"Hey Veronica." Max appeared standing in front of one of the white boards.
"What did you do?!" I asked after I turned around to him.
"What was supposed to happen." He says.
"Oh the guys suddenly getting all really bad grade do not happen unless magic is involved, Max!"
"That's why I have powers. To make sure humans as weak as them don't get any ideas that they are more superior than you."
I scoffed. "Just because there are rules from the magic realm does not mean it applies to Earth. No one is superior to anyone."
"How about that black man on the news all the time?" He asks.
I sigh. "That is very different. He doesn't use his power for public gain."
"Well they should."
I scratched my head. "Well, that is the last time you do any of that."
"What?" He asked in a more whiny and angry tone.
"That's right. No more messing their grades, or anyones for that matter!" I demanded.
"Really! Even people that aren't your friends?"
"Oh, them especially since I don't know even know them, they don't deserve it and haven't even done anything to me."
"Yet." Max mumbled.
I ignored that. "Well, how about yours?" He asks.
I was then stumped on that question. "I don't know."
"It's not hurting anyone to move your grades up, huh?"
I sigh and think about both the positives and negatives. One positive: I could brag about it to my friends like they do to me. One negative: I am breaking my one rules. Never use magic for human things.
"But it's me who's using my own magic." Max suddenly said. I forgot that Max can see into some of my thoughts.
"And yet I am allowing you to do it." I argue.
He shrugs. "Well right now I am trying to convince you to allow me."
I do go over what I was thinking about, then came up with a compromise, "Alright."
A sudden cheery smile appears on his face. "Yes!" He cheered.
"But there are restrictions." I interrupted his joy.
He calmed down and started to pay attention. "One: you can not make all my grades straight A's. It could create suspicion if I get a low grade on a quiz or assignment." He nodded in agreement. "Okay."
"Second, don't mess with anybody's homework so they could get a worse grade than me." He nodded again. "Third, you can only help me with my homework and I guess you can help me cheat on the quizzes and tests."
He suddenly got a smirk. "Oh I like the sound of that." After actually negotiating with Max on not to really cheat for my grades I left the room and continued on my day.
I was really hoping that I would finally get to Max's other shoulder like I have been wanting to all week. Once I walked in to the library I went to the librarian's desk expecting no one there, but not this time.
"Hey Andy." I say shyly.
"Hello Veronica." I don't know why, but I did miss him saying that.
"Your back in the library?" I ask as I set my backpack down on the ground.
"Not for long. I had to check for openings on library volunteers." Andy says flipping through the clipboard fulled with papers.
"You're interested in volunteering for the library?" I ask.
He nods without looking back up at me. "Yup."
"Even if Harley volunteers here too?" I ask. That is one of the reasons why Harley hasn't been around that much. She has been volunteering for the library ever since we got back from break. That is one of the reasons I haven't seen her. We don't have any classes together either.
Andy sighs as he looks through the library volunteer sheet seeing Harley's name written on almost all of the slots. "Has she talked about me anymore?"
I was shocked at the question and really tried to remember when was the last time she has dissed on Andy. "Uh No, not that much. Why?"
He sets the clipboard back down and pulls out a pencil from his jean pocket. "Just because she does most of the library volunteer slots and some of them are with me."
I chuckle. "Trust me I will tell you if she does talk about you."
As he was writing on the paper I went on to ask what I have been wondering. "Are you going to start to talk to me now or what, Andy?"
"I didn't think you would want to, and just be glad that I am doing something useful that people will recognize."
"Just because I told you not to ask about being more involved with magic doesn't mean I wanted you out of my life."
Andy looked up from the clipboard, and actually looks at me. "That's just it Veronica. Magic is your whole life now." My heart sank at his words, making me realize that he is right. Magic has successfully taken over my life, and taken my long time friends away.
Andy sets the clipboard down and puts on his backpack. "Well, I have to get going."
"Ok." I say softly as I watch him leave. Me and Andy have never had a fight this bad that it would stop us from talking to each other, and we have been friends ever since 2nd grade. I didn't know, not talking to Andy would feel so odd.
"Even though you two are friends, you have no obligation to explain anything to them." I heard Max say behind me.
"You do know that those so-called 'friends' just like you for your magic right?" Max asks, as I slowly turn to face him.
"No they don't." I say angrily, wanting to not believe it.
"Then why did you tell them?"
I sigh looking away from him. "I basically had to since..."
"They stupidly figured it out themselves." He adds casually.
I tilt my head as I looked back up to him. "Really?"
Max shrugs. "What? It's true right? You told me yourself."
I cross my arms and mumble. "I didn't say it like that." I guess I didn't look to great when Max changed the subject and asked if I wanted to get started to train for today. I nodded and headed to the gym.
