~Y/N's POV~

On a typical day, I would sit in my room and stare at the ceiling while reflecting on prior missions I had been assigned to by General Shepherd.

However, I suppose I could say that this time was quite different from all the others.

Let's start with the fact that General Shepherd had informed me days prior to today that I would be given a different mission—one that was more permanent and less time-sensitive—and that I would be assigned to it as soon as he received more information. I sat against my bed frame, flicked a knife in my palm, and threw it straight across my room, hitting the bullseyes of the dartboard I had hung up. I had a terrible gut feeling about something, but I ignored it.

As I heard shuffling footsteps approaching, I turned to face my door entrance. One of Shepherd's men knocked softly before opening it, and I said nothing as my eyes remained fixated on the man who was standing there.

"General Shepherd needs to speak with you right away; you know where to meet him." As he walked away, he said in a firm tone, closing the door behind him. I merely rolled my eyes, tucked my knife away where I always kept it, and got out of bed to go meet the man who had asked to see me in his office.

I sensed myself being watched as I left the room, but I dismissed it as nothing to worry about for the time being and continued walking to General Shepherd's office, making sure I was mentally prepared to absorb any information he might have prepared for me.

I let out a short sigh as I reached the torturous door to his office before hearing someone on the other side invite me inside.

He must have been closely watching the door and listening for any shuffling movement that could have indicated whether or not I was present because it caught me off guard that he heard my footsteps, which I frequently subconsciously muffle. Again, he was a General; you need to always be ready for any possible emergencies.

I glanced back momentarily and noticed a figure move out of view as I lowered my hand to turn the doorknob. There were eyes and ears everywhere, which could imply a number of things. Before moving my legs to enter his office, I quickly checked the area around me in case I was being ambushed.

After my previous mission, I decided not to take any chances with a potential traitor lurking around my perimeter and I didn't want to make the same mistakes twice.

"Sir, you asked for me?" I asked the general as I shut the door behind me. I could see that he was smoking a cigar and had that sly look on his face that always signaled that he was up to no good.

"Y/L/N, feel free to take a seat." He gestured with his hand toward the seats in front of his desk, and I hesitantly followed his instructions as I quietly sat down.

"You have been working under my direction for years, and I appreciate your efforts. However, Task Force 141 needs your high level of expertise." He spoke only briefly as he lit another cigar for himself while still holding the first one in his mouth.

I was somewhat surprised by the abrupt praise, "Thank you, sir. It has been an honor," I responded as I sent a bewildered gaze his way.

"I've assigned you to work briefly alongside them on this operation. There is no set time frame for this mission yet, but it will be determined upon arrival. They require someone to keep an eye on them from above, which is where you come in. Captain John Price will explain the assignment in greater detail later, but for now, you are dismissed to your room to pack your possessions. The heli will be waiting for you as soon as the sun rises tomorrow."

He gave me an unfathomable harsh look that would have sent chills down my spine if I hadn't done missions like this over a hundred times before, so I simply nodded and murmured, "Thank you, sir," before turning my back on him to exit the room.
