Sighing heavily, he rubbed at his tired eyes. He then checked his watch as he closed his laptop. Another long day. He couldn't even remember the last time he left the office at 5 pm. Not that he had anyone to rush home to.
Sure that he was the last person there, Lindsey got up from his desk, collected his things and was on his way out. As he switched off the light, he noticed the one at the end of the hall was still on. His eyebrows slightly creased, he walked in that direction instead of where the elevator was.
A soft knock on the doorframe caught her attention. She looked up and gave him a tired smile. "What are you still doing here?"
"What are you still doing here?" Lindsey repeated. "I thought, everyone had already left."
"You guessed wrong then." She shrugged, typing something on her computer.
"Come on, it's time to go home." Lindsey said. "You must be exhausted. You've probably left a bunch of spelling mistakes in that email you're writing. You don't want to send it out like that, do you?" She didn't find him very humorous. "Stevie? You okay?"
"I'm fine." She replied and he suddenly realized that she'd been saying that a lot lately.
Putting his things down, Lindsey slowly approached her desk, placed his hands on top of it and leaned in a bit closer. "Are you really?"
"Yes." Stevie assured, but she failed to convince him.
"Don't bullshit me." He gave her a pointed look.
She frowned and leaned back in her chair. "I'm your boss, you can't talk to me that way."
"We've also been friends for what, 15 years? Besides, no one else is around, so yes, yes I can." He smirked.
The serious expression on her face quickly vanished, she laughed lightly, shaking her head. "Honestly, Linds, I'm fine. Don't worry about me."
"Well, it's-" He paused to check the time again. "Almost 10 pm on a Friday night and you're still working. That's not really like you." She sighed, cursing him for knowing her so well. "I'm sure you've got a hundred missed calls from Tom." Her demeanor instantly changed, he frowned. "What's going on?"
"Tom and I are no longer together." Stevie announced as if it was nothing. She shifted her gaze from Lindsey and focused on the screen of her laptop again.
"Excuse me?" Lindsey's eyes grew wide. "What do you mean? What happened? Are you taking a break or- I had no idea you were having problems, I-"
"Neither did I until a couple of months ago, when he told me, he doesn't love me anymore." Stevie shrugged, pretending like that had no effect on her.
"What?"
"Lindsey, seriously?" Stevie looked up at him, annoyed.
"Okay, fine." He backed off, holdings his hands up. "If you're not ready, I won't keep asking. But-" She raised her eyebrow. "I'm taking you out for a drink."
"I-"
"You can't say no." Lindsey shook his head and closed her laptop for her.
