Stevie sat on the edge of the bed, her hands behind her back, working on clasping her bra. She wasn't exactly trying to be quiet, when she woke up, but it would have been nice to sneak out unnoticed. No such luck. She was about to reach for the rest of her clothes, but an arm from behind wrapped firmly around her waist and pulled her back to lie down again.
"Where do you think you're going?" Tom asked, his eyes still closed.
"Uhm, I'm going home?" Stevie didn't see why she should break herself free from his hold as she now lay beside him.
"What's the rush?" Tom asked, pressing a kiss to her bare shoulder. "We could have breakfast instead." A heavy sigh was enough for him to open his eyes. "What? What's going through your mind?" He eased his grip on her and brought his hand up to gently caress her face.
"Do you even have to ask? Where do I begin?" Stevie scoffed, she turned her head away from him. "Why did you ask me to come home with you? How did we end up in bed together? Why are you being so sweet to me? Why... why did you tell me, you love me, when a couple of months ago, you swore you no longer had any feelings for me?"
"Oh, you really meant it, huh." Tom cleared his throat as he rolled onto his back. "Honestly? I don't know." Stevie rolled her eyes and moved to get up, but he grabbed her hand in order to stop her. "Seriously." He added, looking at her and maybe it was the fact that she hadn't totally gotten over him yet, but he seemed sincere. "I was surprised to see you last night. We said, hello, and I thought that was going to be it. But I just... I couldn't keep me eyes off you. I was going to leave with my friend, but when I passed you by, I just froze on the spot, I couldn't walk away."
"Maybe you should have." Stevie wondered aloud. "You wouldn't have to explain yourself to me right now."
"What if it's a good thing?" Tom shrugged. "I didn't really give you a reason, when we were breaking up."
"Except you did. You told me, you didn't love me anymore." Stevie felt anger slowly rising inside her. "Were you seeing someone? Are you seeing someone?"
"No." Tom shook his head. "To both." He added, sitting up. He turned so they were face to face. "I'm not really sure if our breakup even had something to do with you. The truth is, I'm not happy, I haven't been for a long time. Maybe it's my job, maybe I just need a change and..."
"And instead of talking to me, you decided that the best change in your life would be to ditch me?" Stevie glared at him, arms crossed over her chest.
"I understand, how that sounds. I'm sorry." He sighed.
"I've been hearing that a lot lately." Stevie scoffed.
"Have you moved on from us?" Tom gulped, nervously awaiting her answer. "Are you seeing anyone?"
"I've been trying to, but last night set me back." Again, she shot him a look. "I'm not with anyone."
A small smile crossed his lips, Tom reached for her hand. "I know that this is messing with your head and again, I'm sorry, but maybe... Maybe this doesn't have to be a one time thing? Maybe I could call, see you some time?"
She stared at him for a moment, then slowly withdrew her hand from his. "I don't know." She said as she moved to get out of bed. "I don't know anything right now."
