"Well?"
Stevie sighed, looking up at Lindsey, who was staring back at her impatiently. "Well what?"
"You have to do it." Lindsey said, pulling the covers back down as soon as she'd pulled them up and nearly over her head. "We can't just sit around and see what happens."
"Why not?" Stevie shrugged, attempting to turn over in bed on her other side, but he stopped her. "I'm tired, I'll do it tomorrow."
"I'm not asking you to carry a bunch of bricks, Stevie. All you've got to do-"
"I know, what I have to do." She emphasized, showing off her irritation as she moved to sit up. "What if it's... not, you know... Maybe I'm just imagining things."
"That's exactly why you have to-"
"Alright!" She interrupted him again. "Alright, I'll go pee on a fucking stick."
"That's my girl!" Lindsey grinned, jumping out of bed to follow Stevie into the bathroom. However, she got to it first and slammed the door shut in his face. "Hey!"
"You're not coming in here." Stevie told him through the door. "I'm not letting you watch me."
"Okay, fine." Lindsey backed off, though, he didn't move an inch. "So? Are you doing it?"
"Oh my God, Lindsey." Stevie breathed out heavily. "I won't be able to if you're standing out there. Please, just- just give me a few minutes alone in here, alright?"
Fair enough. The past couple of days had been stressful enough. Actually, more than just a few days. Lindsey noticed something different about Stevie a week or so ago. He had a feeling that she was keeping something from him and the longer she kept quiet, the crazier the scenarios played out in his head. I'm late, she finally told him, for what, he asked, she gave him a look as if asking, are you stupid? Lindsey got excited as soon as the realization hit him. Stevie was a nervous wreck. One moment she believed that she was pregnant, the other, she thought, she was starting menopause way too early. He tried his best to be as supportive as he possibly could be, he kept saying that there was just one way to find out. She kept putting it off. Of course, she wanted to be a mother, especially since they started talking about children more and more about two months after they'd moved in together. That was nearly six months ago. She didn't want to be left disappointed. Worse than that, she didn't want to disappoint him.
Coming out of the bathroom, Stevie wasn't at all surprised to find Lindsey about two steps away. He kept his mouth shut, but his eyes were begging her to say something. She shrugged weakly.
"We have to wait." Stevie said, Lindsey gave a small nod of his head.
So, that's what they did. They sat together for several minutes, the longest in their lives. Stevie slipped her hand into Lindsey's and he gave her a squeeze. His mind was racing, but he felt as though every single thing that he could say was stupid, so he kept quiet. His heart was beating out of his chest, sped up by Stevie's heavy breathing, a clear indication that she was nervous too.
"Maybe-" She began, but paused. "I don't know, maybe it's been long enough?"
"Do you want to go look?" Lindsey asked, already standing up.
He wrapped his arm around her as they walked the short distance. He gave her a small push to look first, but she shook her head, saying, she wanted to do it together.
Taking a deep breath, Stevie reached for the stick and hesitated for a second. Lindsey pressed a kiss to her cheek and she turned it over. Neither of them spoke for moment. Until...
"We're-" Lindsey tried.
"Having a baby." Stevie finished, facing him, her eyes wide. "We're having a baby." She repeated.
It took a few seconds more for the initial shock to slowly start going away and Lindsey nodded, a smile spreading on his face. "We're having a baby."
