Lindsey stood in the doorway of his daughters' room for a minute longer after he'd switched the bedside lamp off. Two kids under five was an every day challenge, but he had never questioned their choices. He had the life he'd always wanted and was lucky enough to create with the woman he loved. No doubts, never.
Stevie was in the kitchen of their new house they'd recently moved into, cleaning up after dinner. Lindsey smiled to himself as he walked in and approached her, he circled his arms around her.
"Hey." Stevie glanced at him as he rested his chin on her shoulder.
"Hey." Lindsey echoed. "I told you to wait for me."
"It's okay." Stevie said, scrubbing a plate. "You put the girls to bed."
"Ugh, I know, such a terrible task." Lindsey scoffed, pulling away. "I absolutely hate, when I have to read a story before bed to the two out of three people I love more than anything in the world."
Stevie laughed lightly, shaking her head. "Does getting more sarcastic with age run in your family or..."
"With age?" Lindsey gasped. "Who's a year older than who here, huh?"
"Less talking, honey, more opening a bottle of wine." Stevie smiled at him, leaning against the kitchen counter. "It is our 2nd wedding anniversary after all."
"Ha!" Lindsey exclaimed, pointing a finger at her. "And I bet you think that I've forgot, but I haven't."
"Well..." Stevie shrugged, drying her hands on a kitchen towel. "I haven't received a gift yet, not even flowers, so."
"Oh, I have a gift for you." Lindsey grinned, pulling the cork out of the bottle he'd picked. Stevie took two glasses and went to him, holding them out. "And you're going to love me for it."
"I'll be the judge of that." Stevie eyed him suspiciously. "You know, I'm only joking though, right? I don't really need you to get my anything. I'm pretty happy as is."
"I know." Lindsey nodded, leaning in to peck her on the lips. "But you still deserve one. After all, I'm not always easy to deal with and you're with the girls all day every day while I'm at work."
"I didn't quit because I had to, I wanted to." Stevie shrugged, clinking her glass against Lindsey's before she took a sip. "I'd never thought that I'd want to be a stay at home mom, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love taking care of my gorgeous husband after a long day, too."
Lindsey smiled, sliding his arm around her back. "And I love you for taking care of me." He said, kissing her longer this time. "I love you."
"I love you." Stevie put he wine away to lock her arms around his neck. "I can't believe that this is how my life turned out. I kept searching for something, for someone, while you were there with me the whole time."
"Telling you that I had feelings for you was the scariest thing I've ever done." Lindsey admitted. "But it was also the best thing I've ever done."
"That I can agree with." Stevie nodded, standing on her tiptoes, she pressed a few small kisses on his lips.
"So, do you want that gift or not?" Lindsey asked, gripping her waist.
"Do you seriously have to ask?" Stevie laughed, she followed behind him as he turned to leave the kitchen. "What is it?"
"Patience." Lindsey told her, while looking through his work briefcase. He then pulled out an envelope and handed it to her.
"What is this?" Stevie repeated herself, he sighed.
"Open it."
So she did. Stevie unfolded what looked like a travel leaflet and lifted her eyes up to look at him. "Thanks?"
Lindsey laughed, rolling his eyes. "I wanted to propose to you in Paris or Rome." He began. "But... I accidentally got you pregnant twice, which made me change my plans, so..."
Stevie frowned, looked down at the leaflet again. "You're taking me t-to Paris?"
"If you go with me." Lindsey shrugged, nodding his head. "Happy anniversary, baby."
