I sit in my lab, looking at the vials of blood taken from the people killed by the unknown drug. I have experience working with blood, but this is different from what I did in the past.

As I sulk and think of a plan of action, I hear the buzzer to my lab go off and someone walk in.

I swivel around in my little chair and see a very tall man walk in. He's wearing a sniper's mask, and looks quite well built. I note his tiny waist.

"Hello, you must be the partner General Schneider told me about," I stand up from my chair to greet him.

"Ja. My name is König." The softness of his voice surprised me, at first glance he looked like a brut.

I smile at him, neck at an awkward angle, looking up at him.

"Nice to meet you. I'm doctor Y/N L/N, but you can just call me Y/N."

He nods and says nothing.

I admire him for a bit before turning around to my desk.

"So, you're stuck with me, huh?" I laugh to ease the tension, but he doesn't react the way I hoped he would so I just made things awkward for myself.
He doesn't seem to be very social, but neither am I so I guess I have to be the social one this time.

"Anyway, I still don't have a plan, do you have any suggestions?"
"You're the doctor, I only follow orders."

I frown. Makes sense. He's not social but he's definitely direct.

After I tell him to take a seat so he doesn't keep towering over my soul, I sit and create a plan, which took about an hour to do.

I tested the blood in all kinds of different ways, looked at notes of the effects the drug had on the soldiers, and was still stumped. König, meanwhile, silently observed my inner turmoil.

It was getting late and I kept König almost the whole day, but he did not voice a single complaint. He doesn't seem to be one to do so anyway.

"You know what, I'll just pick this up later. Are you hungry? Maybe we should get something to eat," I turn to him.

He seems to ponder for a moment before responding.

"Yes, ok."

I purse my lips and walk to the canteen with König following close behind.

I grab some fruit and pasta and sit down at a table farther away from people, and König follows.

I notice that he hasn't gotten any food, which I comment on.

"You're not going to eat?"

He looks at me with his (pretty) eyes.

"I eat in my room."

I nod in understanding.

"Because of the mask, right? Why do you wear it anyway?"

I see him furrow his eyebrows and instantly regret asking. Idiot, that's a personal question.

Before he has a chance to answer, I cut him off.

"Forget I asked. I understand you have your reasons."

He seems to relax at my words, to which I sigh in relief in my head. He'll tell me when he feels like it, I guess. Since we'll be working together, we'll be getting closer, and finding out about eachother's past would be inevitable... Which is not something I look forward to. I'm afraid of what he might think of me then.

After the quiet dinner, me and König return to my lab.

After numerous other experiments, I finally understood what the drug was. It contains a recently discovered element called Xinthium, which causes people to go into a submissive state.

"Oh my god."

König looks at me quickly.
"You got it, Ärztin?"

I ignore the fact that I don't know what he just called me and tell him what I had just discovered.

"This is so interesting. The thing about Xinthium is that it's not lethal to humans, so how could it be killing them?" I talk to mostly myself, but König seems to think with me.

I sigh as I cannot find the answer to my question.

"I think it's enough experimentation for today. I'm beat," I stretch in my seat, dramatically moaning.

König looks at me and nods.
"You should get rest. You worked hard today."

I look at him in astonishment. Usually people would call me lazy or call me out for procrastinating, but he actually acknowledged that I did something.
I bite back a smile.

"Well, you can go to your room now, I'll just tidy up here," I begin to clean my mess and notes, but notice from the corner of my eye that the man came over to me.

"I can help you, tell me what to put where."

My heart swells. He's so kind.

"Thank you, König. I really appreciate it."

After 30 minutes of cleaning, we went to our separate rooms, which were surprisingly near each other.

As I lay in bed, struggling to fall asleep, I think about my discovery.

There was seemingly no other chemical in the blood, just Xinthium. This doesn't make any sense. I have to create a vaccine for it, AND something as strong. And I have only a month to do so or I'm dead. This is just great.

With those thoughts in my head, I fall asleep.
