"This is insane."

Me and König looked at the lab results. He's standing right behind me, his mask tickling my neck. He smells of sandalwood and cinnamon. Reminds me of incense.

"I see it's bad, but why exactly?" König finally voices his confusion.

"Technically, the chemical they use to make the lethal drug is Xinthium, but they've changed its chemical properties by mixing in petroleum and dimethyl ketone, I think. These are the only ingredients I can think of having such an effect on Xinthium. And because they only changed its chemical properties a little bit, it is still technically just Xinthium."

König listened intently, trying to understand what I said.
"Are you really just a doctor?"

I look at him, surprised.
"Yeah. All— all doctors know this. It's elementary."

He nods, but I don't think he believes me.
"So what does this mean for you?"

I think. What does it mean? I can't exactly tell him the whole truth. That I'm supposed to create a chemical weapon that will kill a lot of people, which is very illegal, and which I could die for. It seems I'll die either way. But I'm not gonna let that happen. I promised.

"It means that I can finally figure out how to make something that counters the effects of the drug to help our soldiers."

"So is this where we go and find someone to test your medicine out?"

I frown.

"Yeah. We'll have to take one of the enemy soldiers, I guess." I don't like this at all. I wouldn't have cared in the past, but I've changed.

König doesn't seem to care about using a human as a test mouse as I do, and simply accepts that we will have to do that.

"When do we leave?"

"Well, I still have to make the medicine, so I guess next week. I just need some time."

"I understand."

König gave me space while I tried to make C-X, which is what I'm calling the medicine, and I used the alone time to try to create something as powerful as the enemy drug.

Why can't they just use Xinthium on the enemy? Or use the same drug they do? The former leaves people delirious and easy to manipulate, the latter is effective too, just more lethal. It doesn't make sense, but I still do what I was told to.

After a couple of days I have successfully created a serum which should at least slow down the effects of the drug, and, unfortunately, successfully created a toxin that should burn people from the inside. Very graphic.
In all those days, König had not bothered me, but I kind of wish he did. His presence gave me a sense of security, I haven't felt safe ever since that day.

My nightmare entered my mind, which brought back bad memories.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to!"
"SHUT IT, little bitch. I'm going to make. You. Pay."

A knock to my bedroom door brought me back from my flashback. It's 11pm, I wonder who would need me this late.

I get up from bed and open the door, and it's not the person I was hoping to see.
