I felt like I could breathe again after telling that story.
I looked over at König, who's attention was fully on me.We looked each other in the eyes for what seemed like hours. I was waiting for his reaction, but I wouldn't get one because of his mask.
I look away.
"I understand if you judge me for what I—"
"It was an accident. It's not your fault."I froze. I've been needing to hear those words for years. People in the military I grew up around were not kind — they did not care about what happened, because they've experienced worse. They physically could not feel empathy for me, which I completely understand. I just needed a little bit of reassurance, and getting it from the one person that seems to care made me tear up.
I look in the opposite direction from König so he would not see me cry. I hated crying in front of people, but this time I could not control myself.
"Ärz- Y/N? Are you ok? Did I say something wrong?" I could hear the worry in his voice, which made me cry even harder.
He shuffled next to me, sitting up and trying to look at my face, which I was hiding.
"No... no. Thank you."
He put his hand on my shoulder, so gently that I almost didn't feel it. I heard people talk about him at the canteen sometimes, saying how confident and brutal König was on the battlefield. I guess I'll see him in action in the next coming days, but for now, he's so careful with me, so kind, that I don't believe what those people had said.
I finally turn to look at him, needing to see his eyes, him.
His brows furrowed while he looked over my face.
"Can I hug you? Just for a second?"
He was surprised at my request, and I could see the conflict behind his eyes.
"Neverm—"
I was suddenly pulled into his chest, kind of awkwardly. His arms were stiff on my upper back, not daring to hold me lower. I hugged him back, and the contact made me cry even more. I could feel his fingers gently patting my back, which calmed me down. When I tried to pull away, he held me in place.
"Please..."
He sounds vulnerable.
Seems like I wasn't the only one that needed a hug.I hugged him as tightly as I could.
And there we sat under the stars, holding each other. We were barely friends, yet I felt like I could trust him with my life.
"Why did you bring me here, by the way?"
"You seemed stressed, that's why I didn't bother you the past days. This is my private place where I come to think, I thought you needed to think, too."I smiled.
After that, he walked me back to my room and we agreed that we would decide when and where to go to test my 'medicine', tomorrow.
I layed in bed that night thinking about König. I consider him a friend, even though I don't know much about him.
-
The morning was cold, but my heart felt warm. I finally had a friend I could trust. A friend.
I happily got up from bed and did my morning routine.
As I opened the door, König stood there, with his fist up ready to knock.
He quickly retracted his hand which was in front of my face."Morning, Ärztin."
"Good morning, König!"We walked to my lab, and I briefed him on my successful creation, omitting the fact that it's a lethal weapon.
"We can go tomorrow?"
König nodded."I also think that—" König got cut off by a knock on the lab door.
When I open the door, I see Adam and instantly my smile fades.
"Hi, doc. I brought you some tea, you didn't get any this morning so I got worried."
I smiled politely.
"Thank you, Adam, you shouldn't have."
"Oh, I did. Especially after yesterday. I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable."Maybe this time he actually understands how I feel.
I take the cup of tea and put it on my desk, König and Adam following my every move with their eyes.
König. He seemed to be suspicious of Adam, which I didn't see any reason to be.
"So, I actually wanted to ask you something, sergeant. In private."
König looked at Adam, surprised that he wanted to talk to him, but nodded his head."I'll steal him for a bit, doc. Meanwhile, enjoy your tea," he smiled with his sickeningly sweet smile.
I wave both of them off and take the tea and drink a big gulp of it seeing as I was thirsty.
I sat down in my chair and started completing some notes, when I felt a wave of dizziness hit me. I assume it's nothing, exhaustion, so I drink more tea and finish it completely. After I do, the dizziness gets worse, to the point where I have trouble keeping my head up and can't think straight. I black out.
(3rd person pov)
Y/N falls limp on her desk.Adam enters the lab quietly to see if his plan had worked, and it did, a little too well. Y/N was knocked out cold, when she was supposed to only be on the brink of passing out so he could get from her what he needed. He didn't anticipate, however, that König would be back so quickly.
"Scheiße! What happened?!" He hurried over to an awkwardly sprawled out Y/N.
"I— I don't know! When I came in here she was already like that!"While König was preoccupied with Y/N, Adam changed her cup to a different one, without Xinthium.
He cursed under his breath.
"You help her, I'll bring her some water-"
"You've helped enough! Leave," König raised his voice, his German accent peaking through.Adam left, angry that his plan didn't work.
(König pov)
I took her to the only bed in the lab and put a blanket over her.I was panicking, I thought she was dead, but the rise and fall of her chest calmed me down. Good. She's breathing.
I looked at her face, devoid of any expressions.
She looked peaceful, more peaceful than yesterday.
I sat down at a chair next to the bed and waited for her to wake up.
"Ärztin... what do you do to me?"
Her kind nature and passion pulled me in. And what I found interesting is how when she smiled, doesn't matter how wide, her eyes looked sad. After listening to her past I understood why, and we weren't that different from each other.
She will be my undoing.
