"No?"
"No."I can't believe it. He doesn't want to forgive me. I only said what I said to protect him. I guess I'll have to live with it.
For now."Okay, I understand." No I don't. I trust him, why doesn't he trust me?
I held his wound closed with some scrap fabric. His bleeding isn't stopping.
"Will you at least let me properly take care of the wound once we arrive? It can get infected."
"I can find another doctor."What a stubborn bastard.
"Please? Let me do this for you."
He looked at me, thinking.
"Fine."
No one can resist my puppy eyes. I'm a pro.
"What are you two... doing?" Soap comes over to us, seeing me on my knees in front of König.
König tries to push me away but I push down on his wound too hard while trying to hold my position, making him hiss and glare at me.
"Oh, nothing, just trying to keep him from dying." I say through my teeth, annoyed with König's childish behavior.
"Right," he sits down in front of us, "I keep forgetting you're a doctor, especially after seeing you out there."
I cautiously look at him while laughing awkwardly.
"Yeah. I trained for a bit before coming here."
Soap nods, still eyeing me.
"I see."Suddenly, Ghost appeared. How does he walk so quietly? I guess the nickname fits him perfectly.
He sits down next to Soap, leaving quite a bit of space between them."What in the bloody hell happened out there?"
"Well, there was a bomb—"
"You know perfectly well I'm not talking about that."
"Oh, someone is about to get scolded hard," Soap comments, a smirk on his lips.I glare at him, telling him to shut up with my eyes, which he understands.
König suddenly stiffens under my touch, groaning in pain. I must have been pressing on the wound too hard from stress. I mumble a quiet apology before trying to think of an excuse."We were a bit distracted. That's all."
"I bet you were." Soap is getting on my nerves.Ghost talks to König this time.
"You were supposed to keep the doctor safe. Because of you, someone could've lost their life, you included."
I look at Ghost, eyes wide. Is he really going to scold König like that?
The latter simply looks at the ground, avoiding all eye contact."I've heard great things about you but today I saw something different."
"Lt, we're all alive, that's all that matters, right?"
"No, Johnny. Everyone has to do their part. He didn't do his, and almost died," Ghost looks at König, "you need to protect what you care about. Otherwise, before you know it, everything will slip through your fingers." This whole time he spoke with a calm but firm tone, like an older brother trying to keep his younger brother out of trouble.I look at König, waiting for some sort of reaction but he simply glances at me and then at the boys, his eyes sad.
"I'm sorry. I'll do better next time," König's voice was low and quiet.
—
The helicopter landed and we had finally arrived at the base. I took König to our cabin to stitch him up while the rest of the guys took Hassan somewhere farther away from the base, where they could interrogate him without fear of compromising the location of the base. I hope they get something useful.
I sat König down on his bed and started to take out the supplies I keep under my bed just in case.
"Take off your shirt."
He hesitates slightly but still complies.
Once I turn around, I see his bare chest first. He's very well built but a bit leaner than I expected. The tactical gear he always wears makes him look bigger. A lot of scars, big and small, adorn his body, giving it character. Some have almost faded completely, some seem more recent. The wound I will be stitching closed will for sure leave a nasty scar. It will not, however, make him less attractive.
Attractive? What am I even talking about. A man is on the brink of death here.
Apparently, I stared for a little too long, because König covered himself by crossing his arms.
I quickly look away, embarassed. How could I get so distracted? I've seen many bodies of men. Well, not in the way one might think. I'm a doctor, after all. Get your mind out of the gutter.
I get on my knees again for better access and get the needle close to his bloody skin.
"Unfortunately, I don't have any morphine at hand, so you'll have to endure."
He nods.
"I've had worse."I start stitching. He flinched from time to time but tried to stay still. He takes it like a champ.
I finish stitching, my hand lingering on his waist for a little longer.
He looks down at me, an unreadable look in his eyes. We sit in silence as we look at each other before a knock on the door cuts this moment short.I walk towards the door to open it, motioning for König to stay in his place.
I open the door to see Soap.
"We have a new mission. We're going to track down El Sin Nombre."
"Who?"
"Right, you don't know. In short, he's a bad guy that controls Las Almas. He has been helping Hassan."
"Oh. We're leaving now?"
Soap leans on the doorway.
"Yeah. I'm not sure about König, though. Alejandro said that if he feels like he can fight, he can come."
"I just finished stitching him up, but if he doesn't make sudden movements too often he should be fine."
"That won't be easy in this line of work." Soap chuckles, which makes me grin at him.
"Yeah. We'll be ready in 10."
"See you."I close the door and sigh. I still haven't eaten anything.
I walk into our bedroom to see König fully dressed, ready to go. He must've overheard our conversation, which he seems to like doing.
"Are you sure you want to go in your state?"
"I'm fine," after he says that he doesn't give me a moment to respond and leaves the cabin. He's still mad.
I clean myself up as much and as fast as I can, ready to go to El Sin Nombre's hideout.
I have a bad feeling about this.
