After the sudden disappearance of my parents, an orphanage took me in. It was deep in the woods somewhere, difficult to find, difficult to escape.

I wake up to one of the staff members ringing a bell outside the room we were all sleeping in.

"Wake up, kids. Time for breakfast!"

I put on the clothes provided to us by the orphanage and start walking to the dining room.

"Hey, gnome, move out of the way!"
A girl pushed me down to the ground.

"I'm sorry, Emilia."

"You better be. Now follow me, doggy."

I followed her like instructed, while two of her friends laughed at me for being her dog.

I believed me and Emilia were friends. When I first came to the orphanage 6 months prior to that day, she was very nice to me, but suddenly her demeanor changed and she started bullying me, but still acted like my friend.

We entered the dining area, and the woman that looked after my group called me over.

"Y/N, I hate to see you get hurt like this. Emilia is not your friend," she told me, quietly.

"It's ok, miss Anna. I know she's just in a bad mood."

Anna looked at me with pity.

"Ok, Y/N. Just... be careful."

I smiled and nodded, and went back to Emilia.

"Emilia doesn't want you to sit here. Leave," one of her minions spoke for Emilia, while she was right next to her, ignoring me.

"But why? I didn't do anything to upset her!"

"Your whole existence upsets her. We don't want you here, so go."

I leave, defeated.

I just wanted to have friends, to receive the love I craved for, and I was ok with being bullied if it meant I could be friends with Emilia, my first friend.

Later, that night, I was walking back to my room after drinking a cup of water, when I saw an open door. The door led to the office of the man that owned the orphanage.

I was a curious kid, so I eavesdropped.

"How many kids have turned 10 already?"

"Five. But tomorrow it will be six."

It was the voice of miss Anna, talking to the director.

"What's the kid's name."

"... Y/N."

Me? Oh, tomorrow's my birthday. Are they preparing a surprise?

"Tonight is the auction. So just put her with the of age kids."

"Yes, sir."

"Leave."

I ran to my room as quickly and quietly as a 9 year old kid could, full-on sprinted down the hall.

I heard the man yell behind me, and miss Anna chased me, asking me to stop.

I didn't understand what was going on, I was scared, so I kept running.
While running, I knocked over a candle, and since the orphanage was made of wood, the fire spread fast.

The rest was a blur. The owner and I were the only ones that got out, while the rest were stuck inside, choking on the smoke, dying slowly, before the whole place blew up because of the gallons of gas that were in the house for emergencies.

The screams I heard that night were terrifying, I will never forget them.

I heard the man come at me from behind.

"YOU LITTLE WHORE! YOU RUINED EVERYTHING! I'LL KILL YOU"

I was backing away from him quickly, stumbling over my legs.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to!"

"SHUT UP, YOU BRAT! I'll make you pay."

He grabbed me and started choking me while we fell to the ground, and I was a malnourished little girl, I couldn't fight against the big man. But something took over me, and I grabbed the closest thing to me — a metal pole.

I hit the man on the head with it as hard as I could, and he got off of me, but it wasn't enough to get rid of him for good.

I got up and started hitting him, again, and again, and again until he fell limp, blood soaking the ground beneath him.

At first I felt numb, I didn't feel like myself. It was the first time I had killed someone, and I hate to say it but after a couple of minutes it felt cathartic. I felt strong, and I was proud that I finally stood up for myself for once.

Later, I was found by the military, and the rest is history.
