The desert's dampening night air clung to the sleeping bodies that were the Mages. Calvin watched Devin's uneasy breathing that was the results of a beginning to a nightmare. Mari slept peacefully next to Devin, holding tight to his hand. Calvin smiled at the scene.
A high pitched whimper made Calvin's head swing around. Jared's arms seemed to be clawing at something in front of him and whimpers passed through his lips, slowly becoming louder and louder. Calvin rushed over and placed a hand over Jared's mouth to silence the noises.
"Jared, wake up man!" Calvin shook his flinching friend. Jared's eyes flashed open and he bolted upright. After his breathing calmed down and he realized where he was, Calvin removed his hand. "They happened again, didn't they?"
"Yeah," Jared reluctantly nodded. "It was way worse than before. I recognized faces; family, friends, all of them dead." Jared gripped the blanket that was now coated in his sweat.
Calvin looked around to make no one else was awake, "These nightmares are getting out of hand Jared."
"These aren't regular nightmares!" Jared nearly shouted. "Every night, except for these last few, I've been terrorized in my sleep! I can't even shut my eyes without seeing those images."
"We should tell the others."
"No, they all have their demons to deal with. I don't want to worry them with something they can't even help with."
"We don't know that until we try!" Calvin insisted.
"This is my issue!" Jared looked at Calvin. "I need to solve it."
"Jared, if your sister or Nadia was facing this, you'd want to help them," Calvin pleaded.
"Doesn't matter, I wouldn't be able to do anything."
"Jared, we just need to find the root to these. They'll be able to help."
"I said no Calvin. You've kept silent all this time to protect them from something that we believed to be over, just keep your trap shut a little longer. I'm sure I just need to adjust being back with everyone."
"Fine, but if they get any worse, I will tell them everything," Calvin threatened.
There was a brief moment of silence between the two, "I'm not going back to sleep anytime soon, so I'll take next watch." Jared stood up. "Get some rest."
Calvin nodded, went over and laid down on the other side of Devin. His nightmare had long since ended and had been replaced by bittersweet memories.
