The warm rays of sunshine danced on Devin's eye lids, beckoning for him to open his eyes. Devin rolled over, placed his pillow over his face and ignored the it. It had been two weeks since he had last seen Jared and Calvin and he already missed them like crazy. It was only during his dreams that he was able to visit them.
"Wakey, wakey," Mari knocked on Devin's door. Two days ago the trio had arrived in Eestri looking for a rumored woman. "Come on you lazy butt." Mari ripped the sheets off of Devin.
"Ugh, I don't wanna," Devin rolled away from Mari.
"I thought you were going to be strong enough to fight alongside the boys when we meet back up," Mari poked him the cheek, "you won't get that way by sleeping."
"I've changed my mind," Devin swatted her away. "I like sleep. Sleep is good, sleep is life."
"Come on!" Mari rolled Devin off the bed and he landed on the floor with a loud 'thunk'.
"Uh, fine," Devin pushed himself up to a sitting position. "Any word about that woman?" Devin asked.
"Nadia's checking out a lead now," Mari threw a clean shirt Devin's way. The woman that the three were looking for had been labeled as crazed, the definition of foolish, and just plain weird. The rumors and whispers said that the woman claimed to use forbidden methods to better improve her magical ability, making her near impossible to beat. To Mari, it had sounded like their type of people.
"You think had we known we'd be going to Eestri, Calvin would have stuck with us?" Devin asked.
"Probably not, knowing him, he'd still want to figure out how to not just be a magic meat shield for us," Mari answered. "You still wishing you had gone with the boys?"
"Yes," Devin nodded. He still couldn't figure out why he had listened to Jared back then. More than anything, Devin had wanted to stay by Jared's side.
"Well, I'm happy that you're here," Mari tried to make Devin feel better. "Besides, I think before you learn combat, you should learn how to use your magic."
"Jared could have taught me..." Devin sulked.
"While learning close quarters combat? I don't think so," Mari had reality hit Devin in the face.
I found her, Nadia's thoughts interrupted Mari's and Devin's conversation. Two miles west of town.
"Let's go Devin, Nadia found us a crazy lady," Mari grinned.
When the two arrived, Nadia was sitting on the grassy ground, staring at the clouds go by. "Sh-She won't listen to me," she pouted.
"What did you tell her?" Devin asked.
"That we-we're looking for a w-way to improve our casting ab-ability and he-he-heard about mediums," Nadia told them.
"How did she reply?" Mari questioned.
"She sai-said that she's done with prank-pranksters and we can g-go trick someone el-else."
"Can I try?" Devin asked.
"Take a whirl," Mari sighed. Devin walked to the woman's house and knocked on her door.
"Go away! I know you be that girl's friend," a loud voice hollered at Devin.
"My name is Devin Winters, I'm eleven years old," He stated.
"So? What's that got to do with anything?" came the response.
"I've been casting spells and using magic in combat for the past few months," came Devin's response. From inside, Devin could hear several locks being undone. The door creaked opened a bit.
"Prove it," the woman demanded. Devin held out his hand and shattered the woman's windows with his sound wave spell he had learned from Ross.
"Ah, sorry! I'm still trying to get the hang of it," Devin panicked when he broke the window. "My issue is aiming the attack right now."
"You said you're eleven?" The woman's door opened a bit further, revealing her emerald eyes.
"Yes ma'am," Devin nodded. "I'll be turning twelve in a few months."
"He was at Trajare's Academy of Magic when it was completely destroyed by that Demintrean general!" Mari yelled from where she was.
"Is that so?" She looked Devin up and down.
"Ma'am, me and my friends really do wish to learn how to use a medium," Devin tried to bring the woman back to the subject matter.
"Why? It's a long forgotten practice," the woman snapped.
"Because we're the Mages of Legend?" Mari tried.
"Mari!" Nadia turned to her friend, a look of horror on her face.
"What? Who's gonna believe her?" Mari defended herself. "Besides, what better reason than the truth?"
"The Legends of We Three Magics?" The door swung open completely. The woman before them was not what they had expected. The woman's hair was long and red, though not as red as Calvin's. She wasn't the tallest person and she appeared to be in her early thirties. Her skin was covered in freckles.
"Yes, we're two-thirds of the Legend, me and my friend here," Mari was beginning to regret her decision when she saw the crazed look in the woman's eyes.
"Two-thirds? So are you missing a part of it??" The woman walked towards Mari and Nadia.
"No...my brother is the third part. But he's currently traveling to Cooronolia for his own training with a friend of ours." Mari took a few steps back. "We read about mediums in our Books," Mari took her Book off her necklace chain and brought it back to its original size. Nadia did the same with hers.
"If you are truly the Mages, prove it!" She stuck a finger in Mari's face.
"How?" Nadia asked.
"There are whispers that the Mages are the ones who slayed that awful man, and that they were wearing these robes," the woman answered. "Where are your robes?"
Mari snapped her fingers and her robe appeared around her, Nadia followed.
"Hmm," the woman rubbed her chin as she thought, "you!" She turned around and pointed at Devin. "Are they the Mages of Legend?"
"Yes!" Devin flinched, bringing his arms up as if someone was about to hit him. "I've been with them since the destruction of our Academy."
"I still ain't convinced," the woman stroked her invisible beard. "You will just hav'ta prove it to me through your magical prowess."
"Does that mean you'll teach us?" Mari asked.
"I shall give ya three a trial run, a month. Prove to me during this month that ya'll are indeed who you say ya are and I shall take all of you on as my apprentices! You shall call me Messa during this time."
"You can call me-me Nadia. She's Ma-Mari," Nadia formerly introduced the two.
"Yes, yes. Now, first things first, you need to lose that stutter of yours missy," Messa wagged her finger at Nadia.
