Upon hearing the bathroom door open and close, I quickly looked up from my phone to see if he was alright.
“You okay?” I asked, furrowing my brows.
He merely nodded and slowly made his way towards the couch, staring at the food. I followed his gaze and spoke with a chuckle, “We have been talking for a pretty long time, so no wonder you'll be hungry.”
I placed my phone down on the table and leaned towards the table a little to open the boxes. The way Jake was acting had gotten me fully aware of my surroundings. I had assumed that he was somehow infected.
I could easily make an assumption as I had read hundreds of articles regarding how infected people behave. To my surprise, his was a bit different since nothing too obvious was showing from his previous actions, but after seeing his face when I returned to him, I knew there was something wrong.
Heeseung had also mentioned Jake having a side that I don't know about, which made me more suspicious. But again, I couldn't just accuse him of being infected. I forced myself to believe that he was just feeling unwell. Although there was only one way to find out the truth, mind-reading.
His footsteps grew louder as he walked closer. He wasn't stomping loudly and he didn't seem to have an uneven gait. He sat down on the couch, releasing a breath as he did, “I'm hungry.”
His words made me look up straight into his eyes. No abnormalities, yet I'm still having a feeling that he's dangerous.
He chuckled while locking eyes with mine, “Are you okay? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“You said you are hungry.” He should be reacting to my thoughts right now if he's infected.
He smiled and looked down at the table, “Yeah, but I don't think I have an appetite for these...”
Oh, please no, not him. I was discreetly reaching for my pocket to take out the pepper spray when I heard his voice coming from the back of my head, “Too late.” I turned my head instantly, only realising later that he was playing with my mind.
My heart raced as I turned back at him, only for him to jump onto me and hold both my hands captive, keeping me from using the spray. Even before I could let out a scream, he bit on my neck and made me release a shaky breath instead.
My whole mind went blank as I started to feel his sharp canines sinking into my flesh with a small prick, and then filling my whole body with an intoxicating pleasure which felt so wrong and right at the same time.
I never knew I could lose control over such a being. I closed my eyes with my brows furrowed, taking in all the pleasure and forgetting everything about what that was going to turn me into.
I released a gasp as he briefly nibbled on my neck after pulling out his fangs, leaving a kiss on the spot he had bitten before leaning back to take a look at my face.
He licked his lips and let go of my hands, which instantly dropped down and hung loosely and I hesitantly looked into his eyes with a weary expression written all over my face.
He quickly got off of me as soon as he came back to his senses and got on both knees on the floor, visibly regretting what he had done, “I-I'm so sorry.”
“You...” I trailed off and chuckled weakly, gripping onto the spray, “It's useless now.” I pushed myself to sit straight, feeling a bit drowsy.
He reluctantly placed his hands on my knees with an anxious look on his face, “I'm terribly sorry, Emma. I just couldn't bare with it anymore, I'm—”
“It's no use apologising, it won't turn back time, nor would it turn me into a human again,” I spoke in a rather mad tone. I was more than ready to ask him to leave.
He looked away, “Well, actually...my bite wasn't made to turn you into our kind.”
His statement peaked my interest at once, making me curious, “But the cases related to this bite all resulted in getting infected.”
“There's a lot you don't know about,” he chuckled shamefully, “There are different types of bite, including the one you know about and the one you just witnessed.”
My heart continued to race again. I had no idea what was happening to me. I suddenly motioned my hand which was still holding onto the spray and stopped right in front of him.
He quickly held my wrist and pushed my hand aside with a desperate look on his face, “Can you please hear me out first? I have no intention of hurting you.”
“You're still one of them,” I trembled, tears brimming up my eyes. I was scared for my life as I didn't have any idea what he could do to me in just a few seconds.
“Emma, you need to understand that not all of us are like those out there causing chaos in public. I come from a family who have been living like this for their entire lives. We know how bad the country's condition is going to be if more of us continue to spread out like this.”
I looked deep into his eyes, seeing how bad he wanted me to hear him out and understand him. I winced as I shook my head, letting out a few tears roll down my cheeks and still not being able to get over the fact that he had been one of them all that time.
He grew flustered as soon as he saw my tears and instantly came closer to wipe it off with his sleeves for me. “Please, don't be afraid of me. I didn't mean to scare you. I'm harmless, I promise,” his voice came out shaky from desperation.
I kept my mouth shut while I continued to sniffle. He furrowed his brows and cupped my face with both his hands, “Look at me, Emma, please.”
My heart started beating even faster when I focused my eyes on his flawless features. He brought up a gentle smile, cooling me off a bit. His hands went down to my shoulders and held them firmly.
“I just want you to know that you mean everything to me. Seeing you like this hurts me, and to know that I'm the cause of it makes me feel even worse. I know I have made a mistake in the past but this time, I want to make sure I have learnt from it.”
He paused for a moment as he reached down to hold my hands, “I know that you know about my past relationship with Youngjae and that you also want to know the truth regarding her disappearance. We can help each other and work together if you would just trust me.”
“I made the wrong decision with Youngjae and I really don't want to make the same mistake with you. This might be a little too early for me to say but I'll do everything in my power to make sure that no one ever gets the chance to win you over, even if it means hurting them, because I'm sure we are meant to be together.”
