"A friend may be waiting behind a stranger's face." - Maya Angelou
It's the first day of college, and I am feeling incredibly anxious. As I stand in front of my closet, trying to decide what to wear, I can feel my heart racing. I don't want to come across as too eager or too laid-back. I want to strike the perfect balance of confident and approachable.
My best friend Lily notices my unease and offers some advice. "Just be yourself," she says with a reassuring smile. "You don't have to try to be someone you're not. You're amazing just the way you are." I am grateful for her words of encouragement. Lily is like the sister I never had. We have been inseparable since kindergarten, and I can always count on her to lift my spirits.
With Lily's words in mind, I settle on a cute outfit of leggings, a white top, and a pink coat, paired with white sneakers. I check myself in the mirror one last time and ask Lily if I look okay. She replies with a grin, "You look gorgeous." I blush and thank her, returning the compliment. I am not used to receiving compliments, so I always blush easily.
We have yet to buy groceries, so Lily and I decide to meet for lunch/breakfast at 11:30 am. I grab my mostly empty bag, knowing that I'll receive all my books today. I look at my schedule and see that my first class is business administration. I take advanced classes, so I know it will be challenging, but I am excited to learn.
As I walk to class, holding the map and trying to figure out where to go next, I walk straight into someone. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going," I say, looking up at the guy standing in front of me.
"It's honestly no problem at all. You look a bit confused. Are you new here?" he asks with a smile.
"Yes, I am actually. I'm looking for the business administration class with Professor John," I reply.
"Oh!" he says, looking surprised. "I'm actually heading there myself. I'm also a business major. My name is William. William Phillips," he says, reaching out his hand.
I take his hand and shake it. "Nice to meet you, William. I'm in advanced business classes, which is why it might come as a surprise. My name is Nora Dawson, by the way."
"Let me show you the way to the class. You can sit next to me. My friend is only coming from next week," he says politely.
We walk to class together and sit in the third row. We are early, and class only starts in 30 minutes, so we decide to get to know each other a bit more. I learn that he is 20, he plays football, he has three close friends, he loves pizza and coffee, people consider him a player even though he is not one, and that he really loves movies. I tell him that I live five hours away, I moved here with my best friend, I am passionate about sports, I love reading, and I have one sibling.
We chit-chat a bit more, William making lame jokes, and me laughing at him, before the professor enters. Professor John introduces himself to the class, sets up his laptop, and starts with a slide show. I take out my notepad and take some quick notes that I'll retype once I get home.
As the class progresses, I find myself becoming more and more interested in the subject matter. Professor John is an excellent teacher, and I can tell that he is passionate about what he does. I am grateful to be in his class and excited to learn everything I can.
