"Without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos." - Don Kardong
As I lay in bed, scrolling through my phone, I couldn't help but feel a little homesick. It wasn't that I didn't like college, but being away from my family for the first time was taking some getting used to. I missed my mom's home-cooked meals and my older brother's corny jokes. But, I knew that this was the right step for me, and that I would eventually get used to the distance.
I put my phone aside and decided to watch a movie on my laptop. I scrolled through my options, looking for something light and funny, when I heard a knock on the door. I got up to answer it and was surprised to see William standing there.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked, a little confused.
"I was wondering if you wanted to grab some ice cream," he said, smiling.
"Sure, let me just get my shoes on," I said, grabbing my sandals and my wallet.
As we walked towards the ice cream shop, William started to tell me more about his friend who was coming back to college. He said that his friend was a really good guy and that we would all get along really well.
"That sounds great," I said, smiling. "I'm looking forward to meeting him."
We arrived at the ice cream shop and ordered our cones. I got my favorite flavor, strawberry, while William opted for chocolate. We sat down at a table and started chatting about our families and our hometowns. William was from a small town, just like me, and it was interesting to hear about his experiences growing up.
As we finished our cones, I realized that I was having a really good time with William. He was easy to talk to and had a great sense of humor. I felt lucky to have made such a good friend so early on in college.
We said goodbye outside the ice cream shop and I headed back to my dorm room. As I climbed into bed, I felt content and happy. Even though I was far away from home, I knew that I had found a great group of friends who would make college a memorable experience.
I found that Lily was still sleeping peacefully and decided to give my mom a call.
She picked up on the first ring "Hey Honey, how is college?". "Hey mom, college is fantastic, I am honestly enjoying it." We spoke some more about my classes and I told her about my new friend. After quite some time of talking my mom said that she missed me and I told her that Lily and I would be visiting next weekend.
After my conversation with my mom, I went to check up on Lily and saw that she was watching Netflix on her bed.
"Are you watching Netflix without me?" I ask her sounding deeply hurt and overdramatic.
"You're funny. Do you want to watch with me?" she asks me.
I climb in next to her and we watch movies late into the night.
