When they turned twenty a full year later, they shared the same two words each way and that was all they said. They didn't call each other, didn't really text. They weren't friends on Facebook, didn't pass each other in the street and share a smile. Their eyes didn't meet, they didn't breathe within the same ten block radius, not one interaction.
But Katie bought the second album. Taylor watched everything credited on Katie's rapidly expanding IMDb with popcorn for emotional support.
They read the headlines, so many headlines.

It had been a little busy.
Katie was laying with her back on the headboard of the bed she had eventually bought to fit her apartment. She was still in the same shitty studio, having took a knife to the paint over the window one day when she was in desperate need to fresh air and could finally open it. She had her six string guitar in her hands, plucking the strings aimlessly as she stared at the ceiling.
Kara had come into Los Angeles for their twenty-first birthday right after she finished finals at college. She had been walking around Katie's tiny apartment ransacking the fridge for something other than almond milk and raisins.
"You make all that money and all you eat is this?" Kara held up a box of saltine crackers with disapproval written across her face.
"I work most days, there's food on set," Katie explained, changing which strings she decided to fidget with, "If I keep much else here, it goes bad. This place is really for me to keep my plants alive."
There were plants everywhere. Kara walked in and had asked if Katie's apartment was infested or had a hole in the wall that they were growing through.
"What about me? I'm starving and your incessant guitar playing is driving me nuts," Katie could only laugh as she set it down to stop pestering her sister.
"Sorry, I'm just trying to keep my hands busy. I'm not used to sitting around anymore," Katie explained softly. It was rare that she had visitors to her place, Audrey was the sole exception if she didn't count a few flings. Her parents never came out west, she had only gone home for Christmas once in the two years she lived there and one Thanksgiving.
She tried to avoid it, something about Nashville brought back tough memories and LA didn't.
Katie's phone buzzed at the perfect time to remind her what she was avoiding. A few casual relationships had gone by for them both, but Katie didn't think she should text Taylor that year. It had been two and a half years since the breakup and she was over it. Well, as over it as she could be while the faint sense of regret crept over her on occasion (daily).
She had never gotten that Facebook friend request from Andrea like Taylor had said. They had managed to keep things separate even if Taylor did allude to their relationship in her music sometimes and Katherine really did use the memories to help her fake cry while filming. She thought about how Taylor said she'd made a good impression, though. She thought about it a lot.
