The weekend of prom was when Taylor's parents had gone out of town. Austin wasn't old enough to attend and his baseball team had a big tournament so they'd packed up and took him to Knoxville so he could play. It had been a few months of stolen nights at the park, even being so bold as to lie to their parents about who they were with and took Katie's shared car into Nashville to have a true dinner date.
While it was true that technically they were both out to their families, Taylor was guarding her potential career and Katie didn't want to talk about it because she still felt the taunting and whispers that surrounded her from the year prior when she'd been made the laughing stock of their grade for asking another girl to prom.
The school had issued a warning over the announcements that no one was allowed on school property after hours following the tent being discovered the next morning, so that wasn't something they attempted again out of fear that the security guard would find them and get them charged with trespassing.
"Katherine, why don't you just put on the dress and go with Kara and Patrick," Margaret Coulson pleaded. She'd cupped her daughter's cheeks in an attempt to show affection. She had been trying to convince her eldest daughter to attend the prom ever since Katie had quite confidently explained that she had no interest in attending and crushed Margaret's dreams of posting a picture of her darling twins and their dates in matching outfits on Facebook for all her friends to see.
It was quite obvious to both twins that once they started developing their own interests and personalities as human beings, their mother became bored and started finding a hobby in sampling wine from their father's cellar collection.
"I'm going to sleep over at Audrey's, her boyfriend dumped her and she could use some company," Katie lied. Taylor had invited her to spend the night but she wouldn't tell her parents that.
Kara eyed her with an inkling that it wasn't the truth. Audrey had been posting all week on Myspace about how excited she was to take whatever his name was to prom and how in love they were. It wasn't a secret that her sister had a distaste for prom but she needed to know where she was headed. She took on her role of nosy 'little' sister well sometimes.
Margaret sighed and broke into sobs, headed down the staircase almost immediately to visit her favourite room in the house. James came in with the camera to take a picture of Kara and her boyfriend before they left for the evening, "Kate, how do you turn this on?"
"The button on the top left," Katie replied. She leaned against the bannister of the staircase and watched as her sister posed multiple times for their father's camera before her mother came back upstairs with a 1953 Cabernet Sauvignon.
"No, Margaret, please not the '53 Sauvignon. Let's try one of the others, I've been saving that for the girl's graduation," James took it from her hands calmly and checked the bottle to make sure it wasn't open, handing it back to his wife so she could swap it out in the basement.
"Have a grand old time, lovebirds," Katie mocked them as she watched Kara find an umbrella so she could walk to Patrick's car without destroying her hair and makeup. There was a huge thunderstorm passing through the area and it had already destroyed many wannabe prom queen makeup.
"Have a good time with Audrey," Kara teased knowingly before she walked out with her boyfriend.
"Well, I'm heading out," Kate said to her father as she reached for the car keys from the hook. He shook his head and took the keys into his own grasp.
