[Mess It Up by Gracie Abrams]

"Dad, could I please borrow your car for the day?" Katie put on her best smile as she offered her father a refill of his coffee during breakfast the morning following her last encounter with Taylor.

"Where are you going?" James asked, it wasn't really an issue but if he was going to lend out his car, he liked to know where it was headed.

"Out," Katie said with a light blush she tried to send away, "Just out."

"Ominous," Margaret chuckled, yet to start drinking for the day. Morning was when she was the most tolerable, "Are you going to see Taylor?"

"Pfft, no," Katie grinned helplessly, answering their question indirectly, "I'm not doing that again, I'm just going out with one of my friends and I need to a car, unless someone wants to take me all the way to the rental place just so I can drive like fifteen minutes to Music Row?"

"Walk?" James asked before taking a bite of his daily buttered toast.

"It's almost an hour, and I'll get mobbed and then Mom really won't get more grandchildren. Please, Dad, you're gonna make me grovel like I'm sixteen again."

"Alright," he dug through his pants pocket until he pulled out a set, passing them to his eldest daughter reluctantly, "Bring it back with a full tank."

"Thank you!" Katie hugged him, it was unexpected from the man but he patted her on the shoulder, "Love you! See you later!"

"Have fun," Margaret picked her glasses up from the dining table and put them on, her hands slightly more red than usual, "She's going to see Taylor."

"I'm well aware," James sipped his coffee, "It is nice to see her happy, regardless of the cause."

"It's been a long time since she hugged you like that," Margaret hummed, "Her pre-teen years, I would probably say."

"At least this one doesn't have cancer," James mumbled. Margaret shot him a dirty look from across the table but he knew she didn't fully disagree... they had been married over thirty years.

"Theodora brought us that really wonderful bottle, what was it again?"

"I don't know, you drank it that night."

Katie buckled her seat belt and pulled out of their narrow driveway, she used Siri to call Taylor and let her know she was on the way. They had plans to meet at Taylor's apartment first for some breakfast and then they were going to head north towards the river and see where the day took them.

She knocked on Taylor's door, having remembered how to navigate her way through the building after doing it just the day before. Taylor's security was friendly down in the lobby and reminded her just in case.

"Hello!" Taylor swung the door open with a cat under her arm, Katie couldn't help but smile at the sight. Apparently, Benjamin had been trying to escape ever since she got him and the larger he got, the faster he ran.

"Hi," Katie replied with a warm chuckle. Taylor gestured for her to come inside, the actress slipping her shoes off at the door, "What are you making? It smells so good."

"It's breakfast burritos. You eat burritos, right?"

"I do, yeah. I didn't try one until like three years ago, though. As long as they're not super spicy," Katie answered, and then she wondered why Taylor looked at her like that.

"I tried one for the first time like three years ago, too," the pop star smiled. She set Benji down and continued towards the kitchen. She had everything cooked and set out, starting as soon as Katherine said she was on her way so that by the time she found parking and made her way up they could eat.
