"Y/n... Y/n... Time to wake up" I opened my eyes to see my mom right in front of me. She didn't look like how she looked the day she left me. She looked like her in her collage years.
"Mom?" I whispered, my voice raspy and tired. I slowly lifted my hand up to touch her face to see if she was a hallucination or not. Before I could poke her cheeks, she slid her hands on either side of mine. Sandwiching my hand between her's.
"Sh, it's alright. I'm here" she hummed. I giggled, "I don't remember the last time you were motherly towards me" I said, my voice still hoarse.
She smiled and nodded, "Yeah, I haven't been the best mom lately, yeah?" "Well, I don't blame you. Dad left and it took a toll on you. Doctors tried to help but you became addicted to what they gave you" I justified her actions. She shook her head.
"Oh, my love, that is no excuse to hurt you" she whispered, rubbing her thumb in circles in my palm. Tears rose up in my eyes. "But..." "Don't justify my actions, dear."
I studied her face as she smiled down at me, her eyes filled with love and yet also regret. "Just know that I'm better now" she whispered, brushing hair away from my eyes. I tried to sit up but she stopped me, putting one hand on my shoulder to keep me down.
"Y/n, I can be your mother again. I'm all better" she told me. The tears rolled down the sides of my face. I balled up my hand and stretched out my pinkie. "Promise?" I asked her. She did the same motion with her hand that wasn't on my shoulder. Before she could say she promises I woke up.
I sat up straight in my bed, tears running down my face. I wasn't sad. I didn't sob, tears just streamed down my face for no reason other than my dream.
A knock was at my door. "Y/n! It's James!" James shouted; his shout muffled by the thick wooden door. "Coming" I shouted back, wiping my tears away and sliding out of bed and to the door.
I opened the door and James hesitated. "You look like shit" he said. "Yeah, but I feel fine" I replied, wiping a stray tear away from my face. "Your face says otherwise" he spoke, booping my red nose.
TIME SKIP
"Do you think that dream means something?" I asked James as I dug through my closet for clothes. "I wouldn't be surprised. But also, I'm not big into the whole "dreams have meanings" type thing" James told me.
I stopped flipping through clothes and stared at a hoodie hanging up in the closet. "What if she is better?" I questioned, feeling my heart start to pound harder and harder against my chest as I kept thinking of the thought.
"I wouldn't get your hopes up." My chest slowed back down. "My bet is on your brain figuring out that your mom should be held accountable for how she treated you." James spoke again.
"Yeah, that sounds about right." "Y/n, what's really going on in your mind about the dream?" James asked me. I turned around and smiled at James. "She looked so pretty. Like how she looked back in college. And the way she talked to me. It's like I was 10 again and dad was still in the picture."
"You miss that, don't you?" "The simplicity of being 10 and having a mom and dad and getting decent grades in school? Yeah. I miss that a lot" I mumbled. "No boys fighting over you to worry about" James teased me. I flashed him a mean scowl and slid on the hoodie I was looking at before.
"You ready for the date?" James asked me. "It's at 4!" "It is 4!" "Oh."
