Tears fill my eyes again. I love Yrsa with all of my heart. I want to marry her. I know it's just a promise ring, but it means so much to me. I'm so nervous. She's still staring in shock, not saying a word. Did I fuck this up?
"Bear. . ."
"Yes, my love," I say in a worried tone.
"You'd be stupid to think I would ever say no. Of course I'll promise to marry you."
I let out a deep breath. Well, I'm glad that heart attack is over. The brightest smile adorns her face as I place the ring on her finger. She sits on her knees in front of me and pulls me into a kiss. I place my hand on her cheek and feel a tear hit my thumb.
"What's wrong, little love?"
"Nothing. I'm just so happy," she giggles.
"I am too, sweet girl."

*Christmas Day*
Yrsa and I are at her mom's to have christmas dinner. We're helping prepare the sides while Adelaide and Lillie work on the main dish. We're all working like a team, a family. It warms my heart to have this. It's not something I ever really got back home.
We set the table with the lovely meal we prepared and sit down to eat. We all fix our plates and banter about how crazy Christmas shopping was, how school is going, and Yrsa's new ring. Adelaide and Lillie already knew I was going to do that. I had to get there blessing of course, but they love listening to Yrsa tell the story, and I do too.
Once dinner is over, we all find our spots in the living room to open up gifts. Yrsa and I agreed to do gifts when we got home tonight. There's some things I got for her that I don't think she'd want her mother to see. Adelaide starts passing out presents, and just like children, we're all eager to unwrap.
I got some clothes and video games. I made sure to thank Adelaide, probably profusely. Video games are far from cheap. Yrsa got some clothes as well and a few home decor items. Yrsa had told her mom about her eventually moving to Norway. Surprisingly, she was more okay with it than we thought she would be, Lillie too.
I watch as Adelaide and Lil open up a present from Yrsa. I look over at Yrsa's face and see how excited she is. She couldn't stop talking about it, but I didn't mind. It's important to her, so it's important to me too. I see the tears in both their eyes. They look at the boxes then up at Yrsa.
"You got us bond touch bracelets," Lil asks.
"I did, that way when I'm in Norway, you'll have something to make it feel like we're not so far apart."
"So, I tap it everytime I miss you," Adelaide asks.
"Yep, and I'll tap right back."
"I'm warning you now, expect 15 taps within a minute," Adelaide giggles.
Yrsa giggles as well. She's so thoughtful. I know she was stressing over what to get them and if she made the right choice. I can say for certain that she did.
As we're cleaning up the mess of presents, we hear a knock at the door. We all exchange glances at each other. We have no idea who it could be. We're not expecting anybody.
"It's probably carolers," Adelaide says excitedly.
She opens the door and all the excitement on her face is quickly gone. She turns pale. It's like she's seeing a ghost. I prepare myself for whatever could be behind that door. I'm going to protect my family no matter what.
"I'm going to step out for a second. You all stay in here."
"Mom, what's going on," Yrsa asks worriedly.
"I'm okay, honey. Just a little shocked. I'll be fine, I promise."
"Adelaide, are you sure," I ask as I give her a look.
"I'm sure," she says glancing to her office.
Is there a gun in there?
She closes the door and we're left to sit in wonder. I go into the office and look around in the cabinets and drawers. My suspissions were correct. A gun. I load it carefully and put the safety on. I place it in my pocket before going back to the living room.
We can hear arguing from outside, but we can't make out what's being said. Who could this be? I swear if it's him again. I will not hesitate to pull this trigger. He's never laying his hands on Lillie or Yrsa again. I want to go out there with Adelaide. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to her.
I feel a small hand grab mine. I look down at Yrsa's pained face. I can tell there's a million thoughts running through her head. I hold her in my arms as Lillie reaches to hold her hand. We have each other.
We hear a thud against the house. I have Lillie take Yrsa upstairs. She protests, but it's for her own good. I don't want her to see this. It's bad enough that she'll hear it.
I go outside and see Adelaide on the ground. I look at the man standing across from her. He looks to be in his late 40s, graying and balding with a beer gut. Time has not been kind to this man. I'm wondering if he's homeless by the state of his clothes and appearance.
He looks back and forth from me to Adelaide. I'm not sure what he's thinking or what his next move is. His eyes are dialated and moving rapidly. Is he on drugs?
"What the hell do you want, punk? I'm having a conversation out here," he says in a gruff, slurred voice.
"It doesn't look like just a conversation to me."
"Adelaide, who is this man," I ask, gripping the gun in my pocket.
"H-he's Yrsa's father."
