Bear seemed surprised when I called him my friend. Sure, I want to be more than that, but I have to wait. I don't want to jump into things. I don't even know if he feels the same way. He called me his friend too. I just hope it doesn't stay that way.
The waitress comes out with our food. She places the chicken tenders in front of me and the burger in front of Da- I mean Bear. We thank her as she leaves. Bear and I eat our food and the waitress refills our drinks a couple of times.
As people were leaving, their dogs came up to me and Bear. I pet every single one of them and I was so happy and so thankful to Bear. He got a table outside just for me because I wanted to pet the doggies. I wanna slip into little space so bad right now. I've wanted to all day but I can't. I don't want to risk being ridiculed by Bear, being completely and utterly rejected.
"Hey, you okay," Bear asks and snaps me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah, I'm okay. Why do you ask," I lie.
"You just seem pretty deep in thought."
"I was just thinking about all the dogs and having one of my own," I lie again.
"Oh okay, well don't let me interrupt your dreams."
Little does he know he is my dream. He's the only thing I truly want right now. I never want this moment to end.
The waitress comes back and hands Bear the check. I scowl at him playfully, and he gives the check to me. The waitress is standing there, looking at Bear in complete disgust. I want to say something, but I'm not gonna bark unless she barks first.
"Um, you're really gonna make her pay," she says to Bear in the rudest voice ever.
Bear starts to speak but I interrupt.
"I don't see how that's any of your business, but if you must know, miss high and mighty, I insisted on paying for lunch. He didn't 'make' me," I snap back at her.
She looks shocked.
"Here's the bill. Don't expect a tip."
With that, Bear and I left. He smirks at me as we're walking back to his motorcycle.
"Well that was a feisty side of you. Thank you for sticking up for me."
"She shouldn't have stuck her nose where it didn't belong," I say still slightly heated from the ordeal.
"Hey, look at me. Take a deep breath. It's okay."
I do as Bear tells me and it's like all of the anger in my body evaporates. I stare into his deep brown eyes for probably a moment too long. I never noticed the little specks of green in them before. They're absolutely breathtaking.
"Thank you. I hate being angry, it's not who I am. I hate my temper sometimes."
"I know what you mean. I have a temper myself. Breathing helps me through it. Either that or riding my bike."
"I can see how it helps. It's very relaxing."
We get to his motorcycle and he hands me my helmet. I pout a little once I'm out of his view. I liked when he put it on for me. He's probably worried about overstepping my boundaries.
"Can you put this on for me? I haven't gotten a hang of adjusting the strap yet," which was, again, a complete lie.
I needed an excuse. He smiles and puts on my helmet for me. I hop onto his motorcycle and hold onto him. He starts up the bike and I hold onto him tighter. I'm not used to the loud noise quite yet. I start giving him directions back to my house but I feel my eyes getting heavy. I can't fall asleep on him, especially on the back of a motorcycle. I lift my head up off of his back. I didn't even realize I was laying on him. I blush a deep shade of a red.
We arrive at my house and I hop off of his bike. I take off my helmet and straighten out my helmet hair. I can feel him mentally laughing at me. He hands me his phone.
"Since we're friends now, I think it's only fair that you give me your number. You don't have to if you don't want to."
He looks down at the ground nervously. I could practically scream right now, but I keep my cool. I take his phone and put my phone number in. When I go to put in my name, I put in She-bear instead of Yrsa. I hand his phone back and he smiles so wide.
"See you at school tomorrow, She-bear."
"See you then, Bjorn."
He chuckles and I watch him drive off. I go into my house and I'm met with two pairs of wide eyes staring at me.
"So, how'd it go," Lillie asks me.
"How'd what go, we just hung out," I try to say nonchalant.
"Well, what'd ya do, sweetie," my mom chimes in.
"We went to a motorcycle shop to get a helmet for me, and even though I told him not to pay for it, he did. Then we went to a diner and had some food. He got a table outside for us, so I could pet the dogs. There were so many dogs! I paid for that to make up for him paying for my helmet, and had to deal with a snooty waitress. Now I'm here."
Mom and Lil look at each other and then look at me with the biggest smile on their faces.
"You went on a date," Lil exclaims.
"I did not! We just hung out. Sure, would I have liked it to be a date? Yeah, but we just hung out. That was all."
"Mhm, sure," mom says sarcastically.
I roll my eyes. Lil and I go up to my room to talk more about it. I can share more details with her than I can mom.
"So, is he Daddy material?"
"Oh my gosh, Lil! I mean yes, but Lil!"
She giggles at me. She knows exactly how to push my buttons.
"Well, tell me the details. What makes you think that?"
"Well, he put on my helmet for me twice. The third time, I asked him to, but I could tell he backed off because he didn't want to overstep my boundaries. He almost held my hand while crossing the street but stopped himself. It was just different. It was the way he talked to me and actually showed concern for me like a Daddy would. Even if he isn't one, I really don't think I'd mind. If he's open to it, I could tell him what he needs to know. He's just so polite and genuine," I ramble. "Oh, and he asked me to give him my number!"
"You wanna know how I know you're going to be happy with him," she asks me.
"How, Lil?"
"You were smiling and blushing that whole time. That smile I haven't seen in a while, since we were kids. You're absolutely head over heels for him."
I didn't even realize I was smiling that whole time. I can feel it now and I never want this smile to go away. He made this smile. He did this to me. I absolutely love the way I feel right now. My phone buzzes and pulls me out of my thoughts. I really hope it's a text from Bear.
