"Where in the name of Eywa have you two been!" A voice shouted from the dark. Ronal came out followed by Neteyam's parents.
"You could have died!" She continued.
The two looked at each other, they knew they were in big trouble, but Ney'ite knew it was her fault, not Neteyam's. He didn't know the island well, and she had convinced him to come with her. Strangely, Neteyam had followed her without question, without even wondering where she was taking him. Because he totally trusted her, and she trusted him just as much.
"Sorry, it's my fault." Ney'ite took a step forward leaving Neteyam behind. Ronal's eyes opened wide, she had never been so disappointed with her daughter. Ney'ite turned to him, you don't have to he mimed with his hands. Yes I do she answered. Neytiri and Jake looked into each other's eyes, they understood that she was acting like this because she really cared about Neteyam, if she didn't care about him she would let him take the blame but without thinking she had defended him.
"All but this I never expected from you Ney'ite!" Her mother approached her in a threatening manner. "You could have died!"
"But mother we were simply-" Ney'ite spoke but was interrupted by her mother's stern voice.
"No excuses," she turned to her daughter and looked at Neteyam. "Now you two- she said pointing at them- I don't want to see you together anymore!"
Ney'ite's eyes opened wide, her mouth fell almost as if her jaw had disappeared. It wasn't possible, she couldn't do this to her. Finally after years she had managed to find the right person for her and like a gust of wind was taking away her chance to be happy. She noticed that her eyes were starting to sting, she was going to cry. The knot in her throat got bigger and bigger, she didn't want to believe that she was doing this to her, that her mother was preventing her from being happy. Neteyam noticed that Ney'ite was about to cry, so he took her hand and squeezed it hard into his hand to calm her down. As soon as Jake saw that gesture from his son, he knew when they loved each other, and theirs wasn't just a simple friendship, he knew that sooner or later they would become a couple.
"Come on, Ronal, you can't do this to them, can't you see how they love each other?" Toruk Makto spoke, interrupting the silence.
"I don't care, he's a bad influence on my daughter! And that's it. Now Ney'ite you will go to our marui and you will stay there for a week." Ronal angrily responds and slammed a hand on her side.
Ney'ite didn't know what to say, she was so angry with her that she could burst at any moment. But she didn't want to point out how she was feeling at the time, she would seem weak and since she was little she had always been taught not to be. He was always to be the example for his younger sister Tsireya. Until days before she had still managed to control herself but since she met Neteyam she could not, it was natural to show him the real her, which she had never done with anyone other than her family.
With her face down she hinted at a faint "yes" and with those words she ran away without waiting for an answer.
When Neteyam saw her running away he tried to follow her, but Ronal stopped him.
"Neteyam do not go after her. It is not advice is an order."
"My son certainly doesn't take orders from someone other than his mother!" Next to him stood Neytiri, at the cost of her life she would always protect him. After all he was his eldest son, the firstborn, her everything. She placed her right arm on Neteyam's shoulder and whispered to him.
"Do what you think is right."
He looked at her with incredulous eyes, his mother was telling him to follow his heart. After all, it was his life and no one could stop him from doing what Eywa had already planned for him. Usually he would start thinking about all the consequences of his action, but this time he did not think about it, he turned around, looked into Ronal's eyes and smiled at her before running after Ney'ite.
Neteyam ran to the cave where she had taken him before thinking she was there, but strangely she wasn't there. So he went back. While walking on the shore he noticed sitting on the branch of a tree Tsireya and Lo'ak. They were laughing together, you could see from miles away that they were in love with each other. He thought he'd go and ask if they'd seen Ney'ite pass by, but he knew it would ruin their moment of intimacy.
"Ney'ite where have you gone." He said looking at the now dark blue sky covered with bright stars.
Meanwhile, Ney'ite was sitting behind a rock, crying. With her big hands she kept her face covered, she could feel the bitter tears coming down her face that ended up on the sand and wet it. Her breathing was labored and her eyes were red because of the many tears she had cried. She had never felt so empty. Even though she knew Neteyam was on the island, she thought she'd lost it, knowing she couldn't see him anymore made her eyes full of tears again. She wanted to say so many things to her mother, but she couldn't, she showed her that she was weak, that she was nothing. She raised her head, which was previously positioned between her legs to look up at the sky. It was beautiful, deep blue filled with small stars that sparkled and gave it light. In the middle of it was the moon, beautiful and motionless. She herself felt like the moon, which hid in the daytime and remained in the background to then emerge the night and shine unchallenged in the sky.
Her grandmother Zrina told her before she died that every moon had its own sun and that she would find it too. In fact she was right Ney'ite had found Neteyam and Neteyam had found Ney'ite.Ney'ite as soon as she heard footsteps come in her direction quickly wiped away her tears.
"Ney'ite I finally found you." She immediately recognized the voice, it was his voice.
"Neteyam." she said looking at him as he sat next to her. " What are you doing here."
"I came looking for you."
"But you didn't have to, you know my mom's gonna be more mad at you." She had looked into his eyes and he had seen his eyes red and swollen, immediately she turned her head in the opposite direction. Neteyam placed his big hand on her cheek and gently turned it towards him. At that moment they were only a few inches away, too close.
"Don't worry, I'm not here to judge you. Crying is not weak, remember, as hard as it is to cry in front of someone, it shows that you trust that person enough to make them feel what you feel, the pain that you hold within you."
With his index finger he wiped the tear and then looked back in her eyes. She was damn beautiful. Ney'ite's face warmed up so he looked down and then looked up at Neteyam.
"Let the fear you have fall away" he added.
He looked away from her and hugged her. He hugged her as tight as he could to make her feel at home, to calm her down, Ney'ite's heartbeat finally started to slow down. It took a few seconds for her to return the embrace and fall into his arms. Then she felt something wet slip down her cheek, she was crying. Immediately she stiffened and in response Neteyam squeezed her tighter.
And there happened something they would never expected.
Ney'ite got up and so Neteyam also got up. She approached him slowly always looking into his eyes. She stood on tiptoe and zeroed the distance between them.
Her delicate blue lips joined Neteyam's in a soft, sweet kiss, full of feelings including pain.
After a few seconds Ney'ite broke away from Neteyam who had a shocked face and kissed him on the forehead.
"Good night Neteyam." Said that she ran away, leaving him standing on the sand to think about what had just happened.
