break the distance

"goodnight mel <3 talk tomorrow angel"

that was the last message i'd gotten from my long-distance boyfriend, kyle spencer, and that was almost 24 hours ago. in our 4 months of dating, we'd never gone this long without talking; never missed a good morning text, we'd have check-ins throughout the day, share news with each other or just be cheesy together.

worst-case-scenarios ran rampant in my mind. what if he was in an accident? what if he decided he couldn't handle the thousand miles between us anymore? what if he found someone closer, more interesting? my heart was in my throat. i looked through our messages, my 6 in a row i'd sent that have gone unanswered. i set my phone down to wipe my sweaty palms on my jeans, and tried to get my mind off of it, hopefully the night out my best friend jaya had planned for us would take my mind off things.

i had about 10 minutes before i had to start getting ready, so i'd use that time scrolling up in our messages to see if i'd said something wrong. i checked his instagram for any recently tagged posts. after fondly looking through screenshots of us on facetime, i sent one last text in attempt to get a response, to no avail, and headed upstairs to start getting ready.

once i had a casual but cute outfit on along with my favorite perfume, there was a knock at my front door. i made my way back downstairs, and grabbed my purse before going to open the door.

time stopped.

"kyle?!"

"hey angel," he beamed, showing off those dimples i loved so much.

he was real, he was here. right in front of me. i didn't waste another second before throwing myself into his arms.

he smelled better than i could've imagined, was taller than i thought, and i didn't even mind how much his blond curls tickled my nose. he held me tight, minding the bouquet of flowers he'd brought for me.

"i can't believe this," i pulled away for just a second to get a good look at his flawless face, before nuzzling my own into his neck. it almost looked like he had tears in his eyes. "i can't believe you're really here."

"i'm really here baby," he spoke quietly as we swayed back and forth.

"is this why you haven't answered me all day?" i nervously asked.

"yeah," he chuckled. "that was torture. i missed you."

we finally pulled away from each other, and he handed me the baby pink flowers he'd been holding: they were breath-takingly pretty.

"jaya helped me do this," he informed me with a bashful smile. "got me your address and told you to be ready at 8."

"god, you guys! thank you so much," i took a small sniff of the flowers. "i love them."

he smiled shyly at the ground and put his hands in his varsity jacket pocket, "that reminds me why i'm actually here."

"yeah?"

"i wanted to tell you in person..." he took one hand out nervously and grabbed mine. "i love you melody."

my breath hitched and my stomach filled with butterflies.

"oh kyle," i was in his arms again in an instant. "i love you too."

he sighed in what seemed like relief, and lifted his head from my neck, and i lifted mine a second after.

though he was shaking, he found the confidence to finally press his lips to mine. my legs turned to jelly, and i was suddenly thankful he was holding me up. we broke apart, and after a second of looking dreamily into each other's eyes, both burst into giggles.

"i love you; i love you, i love you," he said between kisses all over my face. and in that moment, i couldn't have been happier.
