my older brother was getting married and of course i had to attend the reception. as i walked behind my shrinking mother it reminded me of when i was a little girl and i had to hold onto her shirt to not get separated. the venue was humongous which made me try and calculate how many people they invited, so i gave up and sat down at a table with the rest of my family. everyone was piling into the venue and my brother and his wench had not made their grand entrance. people were talking and hugging everyone at their tables, whilst i was sat there on my phone trying to seem as unfriendly as possible. the last thing i wanted to be asked was how happy i was for my brother.

the bridesmaids and groomsmen made their entrance and shortly after my brother and now sister in law. i wanted to shrivel up and die at this point, all the guests and all the happiness made me sick. "look more excited to be here for god's sake isla" my mother sneered softly in my ear, making me more irritated. turning my attention away i looked around and saw a familiar face i knew from my childhood so well. he used to come over after school all the time with my brother and they'd play video games while i tried to listen to their conversations. they were always together.

i muttered an 'excuse me' before leaving the ten people at my table. i shuffled my feet against the carpet before rushing to the bathroom with a half empty bottle of liquor. drowning my sorrows in alcohol was something i was incredibly familiar with. softly after i sucked it up and made my way back to the table i got scolded by my father and grandparents. i intently watched all the fun speeches and dances before boring myself.

god i hate weddings.

dinner went by super fast considering i scarfed down all my food as fast and soon as i possibly could. as the night grew and people politely dabbed their faces after eating, the dance floor came out and the drunk people showed their true colors. i saw my brother and a few groomsmen sneak outside and me being nosy i decided to follow them. i should've guessed why they came all the way out there to do so, but of course it came as a shock to see them passing a joint around. to my surprise the one who offered it was none other than evan, whom i hadn't seen since i was thirteen. "look who just walked out gentlemen, is that you little miss isla?" he smirked, passing the joint to my brother who took a big ass hit.

"wow i haven't seen you in ages" evan smiled, gazing over my now matured body. "still looks like a crybaby" my brother chuckled, making everyone else snicker at me. i walked up closer to the group while rubbing my arms tenderly, attempting to ease my anxiety. "yeah i guess" i sighed, before being offered the joint by evan. "oh no she doesn't smoke, mom would kill her" my brother denied, his mouth opening when i took the joint and took a long hit. exhaling the smoke, shocking my brother and his shitty friends that i was even aware what weed was.

obviously how did they think i sat through every family reunion? definitely not sober, i'll tell you that right now.

evan's eyes never left me, even when i wasn't looking at him i could still feel his gaze on me. i tried to listen to the guy's dumb ass conversation about the new wife but i just kept screaming in my head that evan kept staring at me. i felt like a twelve year old me with the fattest crush on him whenever he talked to me. my head buzzed from all the commotion from inside and the group decided to break apart and head back inside. it was now nine o'clock and the party was in full swing. everyone was dancing and having a good time, it was almost bittersweet.

when everyone went inside me and evan trailed behind. "you coming?" my brother asked evan, clearly not seeing me. "i'm gonna spark another one. i'll be in a bit" he waved my brother on before putting his hand on my waist, noting he wanted to talk to me and only me. "miss me?" he whispered in my ear from behind before i turned around to face him with a shit eating grin. "not even close" i chuckled, putting my hands on my hips. "now i don't believe you. i saw the way you looked at me inside earlier" evan snickered, fiddling with my dress. "why are you touching my dress evan?" i chuckled at his childlike behavior.
