In this KOTLC human AU, Sophie has hopped from job to job, unable to find somewhere permanent due to her 'mildly' clumsy manners.
She's finally hired as a dull data-entry clerk, but she's simply grateful to have a job again. Little does she know...
(A/N: Hello!! Thank you for reading my first published fan fiction. I really hope that you enjoy it, even if just a little bit. With that being said, enjoy the fan fic!) (**this is an ongoing/unfinished story at the moment, I'll update as much as I can.**)
Sophie Foster's warm, brown eyes fluttered open, and she for once felt lively this morning, her eyelids were like the unfurling petals of warm tulips, filled with a blossoming sense of fascination, absorption, and intrigue. She had never been a morning person, she never presumed she would be. She never got enough sleep at night, her mind was constantly spinning with anxiety. Every time she thought she'd solved a problem, ten more evolved from the previous problem.. But today. Today was going to be a good day. And so the girl with glistening, warm tulip-petal eyes smiled with vicious Foster-like determination that rarely, but every once in a while, decided to reveal itself.
And when her determination revealed itself, the world itself knew better then to mess with Sophie Foster.
She was starting her new job today. And this time, she would prove that she could keep a job for.. More than a week.
She'd had previous jobs before. She'd had many jobs. And for the first couple of days, she exceeded all of her employer's expectations.
However.. While she was smart, and generally good at things that didn't require physical coordination, she was also extremely clumsy. For this reason, she's been fired countless times for screwing supposedly simple things up.
She was fired from her last occupation for nearly setting the entire kitchen on fire..
Whilst simply trying to carry a couple of boxes to the dumpster.
She slipped on some oil, dropped a box on the cooktop, and uh.. It all went downhill from there.
Thankfully, no one was harmed. Not including herself- she still had a nasty bruise from last week's "adventure."
She disliked being a chef anyways. She always burned the eggs. It was always the eggs.
Also.. She preferred not to think about that unnerving memory.
Fire was unnerving to her in general. She got flashbacks whenever her nostrils were filled with the familiar blast of a smoky terror she could never get away from. When she saw the glistening warm wisps of flames that some may consider to be beautiful, she felt as if she were sinking into deep insanity. Fire. It Consumed her.. Filled her with agitation and gave her skin crawling nightmares every. Single. Night.
She could never get over her biological parent's deaths.
When she was twelve, and when her younger sister Amy Foster was nine, their house was set aflame. Their parents were inside. They were at school when the tragedy occurred, so neither girl could get help soon enough. The only thing left of their parents, the only evidence that they'd ever once been a family, was a photograph of them, singed at the edges. She glanced at her bedside desk, where the photograph now sat. She wished she could go back and save them in time.
That was nine years ago. <- (Edited)
"Mom. Dad. I'll do better today. I'll get this job. I'll make you both proud of me, if you're watching up there." She whispered as she sloppily tied back wispy strands of soft blonde hair.
She wasn't generally an unhappy person. Her adoptive parents, Edaline and Grady, took care of her and Amy as if they were their own kids. Plus, Jolie was the best big sister ever.
She just missed them. And she felt in some sense it was her fault for being unable to save them.
Nonetheless, she could never change the past. And that bothered her deeply. But it remained an unfortunate fact.
Sophie sat up, stretching out her arms and yawning. In response to the loud knock on her door- which could only come from Amy (and made her wince,) she replied "Mwhatisit?" The effect of exhaustion now becoming evident in her voice as her words stringed together. She didn't know what happened to the lively energy she felt earlier- but now she could hardly keep her eyes open.
Amy slammed the door open with an annoying, devious grin. Her brunette hair, in messy braids,(which somehow managed to look adorable on her round, flushed complexion,) bounced as she sing-songed, "breakfast is ready!~"

"Alright, alright. I hear you." Sophie said, flopping back down on her bed and pulling a pillow over her ears. She ignored Amy's muffled bursts of protests as she did so, however Sophie felt two pairs of arms now dragging her out of bed. Jolie smiled apologetically down at her and she groaned. "Fine, I'm up."
Amy dropped her feet on the ground abruptly, dusting off her hands with satisfaction as Sophie gasped in surprise. "Hey!-"
Jolie lifted her back up to her feet as Sophie glared at Amy, who under such an uncomfortable pair of glaring brown eyes felt obliged to apologize. "Sorry. It seemed like it would be funny."
"To watch me trip and fall?"
"Yep!" She replied without hesitation, but when Sophie's jaw dropped her face fell innocently and she quickly said "I mean no. I would never do such a thing."
Sophie shook her head in slow disbelief, but despite herself she felt a small laugh escape her lips. "I guess it probably was kind of funny. But don't do that ever again." She ruffled Amy's braids fondly and followed Jolie out to the kitchen.
"Good morning mom." She said to her adoptive mother Edaline, who was cooking something that smelled like..
"Mallow melt?" Amy, Jolie, and I squealed at the same time.
"Good morning to you too." Edaline replied with a soft laugh as she plated the mallow melts.
"I thought I'd do a little something extra for your first day at your new job today." She said as Sophie stuffed her face with the ooey goodness. "Mm- mthiz iz pehwfect!" She said through mouthfuls. Edaline tilted her head at the starry eyed Sophie disapprovingly, as mothers often do when you try to talk to them when your mouth is full of food. But to be fair, Sophie could hardly contain herself. And Edaline really did conjure the most delicious food.
Sophie once again felt determined to succeed at her job today. She just needed a little extra energy- and mallow melt definitely helped.
"I'm off to school. Bye Mom! Bye sis, bye Jolie!" Amy said as she slung her denim backpack on her shoulder. "By the way- I hope all goes well at your job!" She said, glancing back at me with a genuine smile.
