"I like somebody else!" Sophie blurted, the words just slipping out of her mouth before she could stop them.
Keefe's eyes went wide. Sophie's eyes mirrored his. What did she just say?
She quickly covered her mouth. It was too late to take it back now, she'd have to think of some poor excuse.
Sophie Foster often did or said questionable things when she panicked, or just in general. Some of the questionable things she said or did were courageous, such as how she confronted Keefe's dad the other day for example. Yes, it was a stupid thing to do. But she didn't regret it, and would probably do it again if given the chance. However, at other times, the questionable things she said or did..
Would cause a disaster.
And right now, she just said something outrageous.
And there was no way she could undo it.
"You.." Keefe stammered, the poor guy confused as ever.
"Like someone else." Sophie finished for him, nodding slowly. Yep, she was going to keep building on her lie. Which was most likely going to make everything worse.
But right now her emotions felt like a tornado and she couldn't think straight.
Keefe fell back into his chair and let himself sink for a moment.
"It doesn't make much of a difference to me anyways.." He said, his words hanging in the air for a moment as he stared at the ground. His eyes suddenly went up again. "But just out of curiosity, who..?"
He claimed that it didn't make a difference to him, but why did his demanding gaze seem to tell another story? she wondered. And why was he so earnest to know who she liked?
Ah, since he is one of her good friends now (or at least she thought so,) he must simply be curious. Maybe he just wanted to make sure this new guy wouldn't turn out like Ryan.
Or maybe he truly didn't care at all as he mentioned before.
Yes, that's probably it. She's looking too deeply into things again.
Keefe's voice rang in her head. She still had to make up someone who she liked.
Her eyes scanned the room as if something would help her find the right response.
She hardly talked to any guys, much less had feelings for them. And the ones who did like her didn't really like her at all, she learned after the whole Ryan thing. Who was she even supposed to say, then?
A name popped in her mind.
No.. She couldn't say that.
But what other choice did she have?
"..Fitz Vacker." She said calmly.
But she was anything but calm. She should have just come clean and said she didn't like anybody at all, much less.. Fitz Vacker. Her hand went up to tug an itchy eyelash but she stopped herself mid motion, letting her arm fall limply back to her side. It would be fine, Fitz would never find out. Keefe didn't care enough about her love life to go through the trouble of telling Fitz she supposedly "liked" him anyways.
"Fitz Vacker.." She repeated, hardly whispering. "Yes, that's right."
She was too absorbed in her excuse that she didn't notice he wasn't saying anything. She truly couldn't read his expression nor could she begin to describe it.
"Uh, are you alright?" She asked, leaning over the desk they were sitting on opposing sides of (it felt strangely like an interview because of how they were situated.) and waving a hand in front of his face.
He held her hand in midair, resting his head on the knuckle of his other hand and staring at her gravely.
"You actually like him?"
Did she say something to offend him? She somehow felt nervous again, and her pulse raced. He suddenly let go of her hand.
"Never mind. I don't want to know."
Sophie crinkled her nose, watching him intently as she fell back into her chair.
"Somehow you seem.. Moody today." She remarked, studying his face which lit up in surprise. His eyes shot up at her.
"Me? Moody? Foster, I'm never moody. You of all people should know this." He coughed, then smirked as if this would make him seem less moody. Liar, she thought. His eyes were still contemplating something and she was deliberating if she should apologize for her comment about his moody behavior, but she wasn't lying. The only thing was that she wasn't sure if the sudden intense moodiness was directed at her or not. Was he angry at her for something she was completely missing? She had no idea.
Sensing her confusion, (he often did seem to pick up on her emotions,) he quickly intervened.
"I'm not angry at you, Foster." He said gently.
She exhaled slowly. What a relief. She hoped he wasn't just saying that to make her feel better, but his tone sounded genuine enough. They stared at each other for a moment, then she smiled. His anger was not directed towards her after all.
He smiled back.
"Oh, that's right. I should get back to work, shouldn't I?" Sophie mused, taking another sip from of her coffee which she had already almost emptied. Unfortunately, she still felt like a complete mess. Somehow the alcohol still had a strong after affect on her, and she felt drowsier than usual. She supposed her tolerance for alcoholic beverages must not be very high at all. She rubbed her eyes and yawned.
Keefe frowned, his eyes glazed with consideration. "You should go home and rest. You had a long night. I don't expect you to be able to come to work and do your normal daily tasks after all that- you deserve a break."
She coughed, waving him off. "I'm fine, really. I only need an hour of sleep and I'm able to function fine." (As if she even got an hour of sleep every night and didn't lug around a ginormous coffee cup.)
"But how about you? I'm sure it was no easy task looking out for me and carrying me on your back. Maybe you should take some time off." She said, crossing her arms and smirking at him herself. She brushed a strand of hair out of her face and watched his lips quirk upwards.
"It was no biggie. You were totally easy to carry. I didn't struggle at all." He puffed out his chest, and she couldn't tell if he unironically thought she'd believe him, but she went along anyways, a snicker escaping her lips.
"If you say so."
"But really Foster, you should-"
"I'd actually prefer to work. I like to stay busy." She wasn't lying. Staying busy helped her feel useful, and she didn't have to focus so much on anything else important, yet she still put her mind to work. She really would prefer to stay and do her job instead of feeling useless.
Keefe seemed hesitant, but after a moment he replied.
"Fine.. But if you ever feel like you can't work anymore please go home. You shouldn't exhaust yourself."
She nodded. "Don't worry, I know my limits."
She exited the office and went into her own workspace.
Her phone buzzed as it had been for the last couple of minutes.
"Bianaaa." She groaned, rubbing her temples. Seven missed calls, and an abundance of text messages.
She finally picked up the phone, (Biana would be pissed if she ignored another call. She didn't blame her.) and winced as Biana squealed over the speaker, nearly breaking her eardrums.
"FITZ TOLD ME HE SAW YOU AND KEEFE AT THE BAR!"
"OMG, ARE YOU AND KEEFE A COUPLE NOW OR SOMETHING? I HEARD ABOUT RYAN TOO!"
She paused, seemingly contemplating, then continued in her over the phone ranting. "ALSO-"
"Woah, Bi. One thing at a time." Sophie reminded her, as if she could calm an excited Biana. (Nobody could.)
She explained all of yesterday's events, from Ryan, to Fitz, and even to her accidentally drinking, occasionally stopping when Biana pried for details.
"No way." Biana gasped, then surprisingly said; "You're so lucky! Not about the whole Ryan breakup- sorry about that. But your life is so interesting! I just mooch around all day." She complained, and Sophie could hear the pout in her voice.
Sophie felt anything but lucky and would in an instant trade all the drama in her life to mooch around all day.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure to bring you along if anything interesting ever happens to me again." Sophie promised.
"You'd better." Biana said, and they both giggled.
"Also, Keefe totally likes you." Biana said out of no where.
"Uh, no way." Sophie said, snorting.
"He does! It's a girl's intuition, trust me." Biana begged.
Sophie just sighed. She was pretty sure she would know if Keefe, or anybody for that matter, liked her. Also, why did Biana have this so called "girl's intuition," and she didn't?
"I gotta go now- I shouldn't be making calls at work. But I'll talk to you later." Sophie assured her as she hung up.
Sophie's day was a blur.
She sat at her desk and worked for hours. Was she overworking herself and pushing herself to exhaustion? Maybe.
But she needed to prove she was a diligent worker to the CEO, Cassius Sencen. Last time she encountered him it was a close call, and she wanted to maintain a decent reputation.
She clicked another key on the keyboard, and plopped her head down on the table, letting her eyes flutter shut for a moment. Just a short rest wouldn't be awful.
...
Well, it wouldn't have been awful if she didn't fall asleep until after the whole building had closed. It really did only feel like a moment, but she woke up in shock when the lights were all off, each one of them, leaving her in pitch darkness. Her frizzy hair stuck to her face as she slowly lifted her head. Why anybody didn't wake her up was completely beyond her. She wiped her mouth which had traces of drool on it.
Sophie Foster disliked the dark, but even more so she disliked being alone in the dark. Goosebumps shot up her arm. She reached inside her bag for her phone and it wouldn't turn on.
"You've got to be kidding me." She said out loud, dropping her uselessly dead phone back into her bag and slumping into her chair. She wrapped her arms around her knees and closed her eyes. Surely she would be able to get out of here soon.
Or maybe not. Maybe she'd be here alone, in the dark, until the next morning. Maybe..
She heard footsteps.
A shiver shot up her spine. Were footsteps a good or bad thing? Was it perhaps a serial murderer or somebody come to rescue her from this miserable building and uncomfortable office?
She would definitely prefer the second option. It was probably the second option, but her mind had no rhyme nor reason at that moment.
The footsteps came closer to her and her whole body tensed up.
The door squeaked open and..
Sophie screamed.
(Cliffhanger, sorry, can't help myself :) Thanks for reading! I promise, this isn't turning into a horror or thriller! :P )
