I woke up to the smell of parchment.

The first edition book on Elemental Magic I'd been reading was half opened on my chest. I lifted it and swore as I realized one of the pages had gotten folded. I sat up and smoothed it out as best I could with my palm, closed it and placed it on the table next to me.

I didn't know what time it was but the upper window showed the sky had fallen into darkness. I must have dozed off for a while then. I'd only meant to rest my eyes for a moment. I'd probably crashed from all the sugar Draco and I had eaten earlier.

When we'd gotten back to the manor, we'd immediately emptied all we bought into a large pile on the floor between the two of us.

Most everything I sampled for the first time was done with Draco watching me intently for my reaction.

Peppermint toads and the flavored jellybeans were my least favorite, as he'd gathered by the faces I'd made.
On the other hand, the gummy wands that changed one's voice depending on the color were my favorite—both for its taste and entertainment.
Still I'd yelped as the second chocolate frog I'd opened had made a quick escape under a cabinet and into the unknown, Draco shrugged it off indifferently. I just hoped it wouldn't melt on some priceless piece of furniture, which I'm sure would cause Lucius to fly off the handle.

When Lucius did enter the parlor he frowned at all the empty boxes and wrappers that littered the ground.

He shook his head in disapproval.

"Now you've both ruined your appetites before dinner," he said slightly annoyed waving away the trash with his cane. Still, he wasn't as harsh as usual. He even seemed relaxed.

Things felt... calmer.

But now I was feeling the consequences of the sugar rush.

I grumbled, stretching out my arms and felt a kink in my neck. I rubbed it with annoyance.

Blinking a couple times I stiffened at the shadows that darkened the alcoves of the library.

It felt... creepy—a suffocating silence. My chest constricted.

I preferred at least some type of background noise to stave off this sort of quiet—the crackling of a fireplace, wind against the window, birds, music.

It was this stillness—especially at night— I couldn't quite explain. But it always made me feel... empty.

I returned the book to its place on the shelf and quickly retreated to the hallway.

As I closed the door and turned, I jumped at my own reflection, grasping my chest and backing against the door at the same time.

I exhaled a relieved breath.

Maybe I still hadn't gotten used to myself.

I walked up to her. She narrowed her eyes at me, furrowing her brow.

"You'd be better where I am," I said at the same time she did.

I lingered a moment, pressing a finger against the window against my trapped reflection.

I turned and walked down the hall, my shoes clacking against the floor, the echo enhancing the sound.

I walked up to the second floor landing ready to retire to my bedroom. A noise caught my attention down the opposite hallway.
