The first snowflakes began to fall from the sky. "Look babe the first snow!" Sav yelled excitedly, pointing out the window.
I walked over her direction. The snowflakes slowly and gracefully drifted from the clouds above and fell onto the pavement. "Wow, It's pretty." I smiled.
A few weeks had gone by, planning, evidence gathering, lots of fear and nightmares, but I had finally started to put myself back together. I didn't feel as miserable as I did before, only now because I knew I wasn't fighting this battle alone. The evidence against Sylvia was piling up as we tried to do everything before taking anything to court. Progress was slow, but it was still progress.
I sat watching the snow fall, taking everything in. A year. It has already almost been a year since I got here. What a wild ride. I smiled, lacing my hands with Sav's and gently kissing the back of it. "Do you feel comfortable enough to go out today?"
"Only if you come with me, I'm not ready to be alone yet." I replied. Sav nodded and I kissed her lightly on the cheek. "It's hard to be without you anyway, even without Sylvia running around."
"Be careful you might summon her." Sav joked.
"Say her name in front of the mirror three times and she might just appear." I said, jokingly shaking my finger. Sav laughed and wrapped her arms around my waist. "Hi there."
"Oh shut up and kiss me." She leaned in slowly, our lips locked together. I smiled when we pulled apart, Sav stayed looking into my eyes for a second. "You know, I would have never guessed you went through what you did. You're very strong. I'm proud of you for getting this far."
I blushed a little. "Me? Nah I still have a lot of progress to make."
Sav shook her head and drug her hands to my shoulders, gently gripping them. "I know my parents are gonna fight hard for my sister but I am entirely on your side. I really am proud of you, and you are safe with me."
I nodded. "When this nightmare is all over, I want a ring on my finger."
Sav blushed. "M-me? Why not you?"
"What do you mean hotshot?" I smirked. "Don't want to take the initiative for this?"
Sav rolled her eyes and placed a hand on my cheek. "For you, I'll do anything you want."
I leaned into her touch. She is the only one that can touch me like this. Its a wonder why I even feel safe with her, I should be afraid but I cant muster it up somehow. Maybe she really did change me.
"Alright, I wanna go look at the snow." Sav said.
I nodded. "Let's go."
We Slid on our heavy coats and opened the front door, sitting on the porch an watching the snow collect on the ground. I sat on the chair, Sav taking her place in my lap. I wrapped my arms around her waist and dug my face into her side. We sat there like that in silence for a long moment, seemingly thinking the same thing. Sav let out a heavy sigh. "There's something on your mind still, isn't there?"
"I guess you were thinking the same thing." I paused, contemplating how to go about it. "Sylvia has made a lot of small moves that we have collected for evidence, but it almost seems like she already knows what we are doing here. Usually she's not as cryptic in her plans. I'm scared for what's gonna happen. You will have to separate from me eventually, and I think that's exactly what shes waiting on. Honestly even if I did go and report this all now, the chance of anything actually being done is slim, and it would dampen my credibility when the court case comes along."
"I don't know, I think we should go to them with what we have. I know cryptic letters and some photos of her aren't enough to get her into any real trouble, but maybe if they knew what was going on we could lever something. Y'know, scare her into going away for long enough to find a plan, or at least enjoy our Christmas."
"The fact I even have to worry about this at all is a clue that I should just stay away from everyone, all the time." I let out a soft chuckle, a pang of sadness making my chest heavy. "I don't even know where to start anymore. It all feels like the same shit, different day now. I just want a normal life again."
Sav stood up, holding her hand out. "Let's take the first step in giving you a normal life and tell someone who could help us."
I took her hand and stood up, following her out to the car. She opened the passenger door for me and got in the driver side. I slid in and opened the glovebox, where a large stack of letters and printed photos sat, ready to tell their story.
--------------------
"Can I help you?" The tired desk clerk sid to me as I walked up to her, my arms full of the letters from before.
"Y-yea I need to report a stalking incident."
The clerk slid a paper from her side to mine. "Fill this out, an officer will be with you shortly."
I took the papers and nodded, Sav guiding me to the waiting area. "It's gonna be alright. There's no reason to be nervous."
My hands were shaking slightly as I filled in all the information I could on the paperwork. A tall man in police gear stood in front of me. "Casey?"
I looked up at him. "Y-yeah that's me."
"Come with me."
Sav and I stood up, following the man into the back of the station. The room he led us too had a big wooden desk and a chair behind it, as well as three chairs in front of it. There were bookshelves behind the desk as well, an American flag as well as the state flag were pinned on the wall to my left. Sav and I took a seat in the chairs in front of the desk while the officer took a seat in the chair behind it. He flipped through some paperwork before taking the paper the clerk handed me, looking it over. I set the letters down in front of me, nervously bouncing my leg. The officer looked at my stack of papers, and then his own. "So you are here to report a stalking incident?" I nodded. ''It says here you were part of a protection program, I'm assuming you've been a victim of a crime before? Most of your documents are locked up tighter than anything i've ever seen before."
"You could say that." I replied, my nerves slowly getting worse.
"Officer, my partner was kidnapped a long time ago. She was put in a program and sent away. She initially came back here to take care of her parents and decided to enroll in a school here. This resulted in someone recognizing her. We have been receiving letters, email threats, anonymous texts and calls, we have had dead animals left on our porch and we don't know anyone who owns animals. We cn't waste any time, so if you could please hear us out and see what you could do." Sav sat upright in her chair, a hand on my shaking leg. Her hand held my knee firmly, reassuringly.
The officer took a second to process what hd been said, then turned to me. "This is an issue for something like the FBI, mot a local police department."
My lip quivered a little. "Please, I don't know what else to do and I just want this to go away."
The officer swiped the stack of papers I brought in and carefully looked them over. "Well we can't really do a whole lot here, but we can let everyone know you are on a priority list if you ever call for an emergency."
I sighed, feeling defeated. "Well, you can keep all of that in case it's needed, I don't want to look at it."
The officer nodded and put all the papers in a folder. "If anything happens and we get a lead, I'll give you a call. For now, just stay safe."
"Thank you officer." Sav stood up, and I followed. She turned and walked out of the office, me following close behind.
