Ten years ago
As snow falls outside on this November night, I feel like I'm going to pass out. My hands are currently covering my face as I sit on the bed's edge. I'm only eighteen; how am I supposed to care for a baby?
"How could this happen?"
"Well..." Alexandra states with sarcasm.
I get up and say, "I know how it fucking happened," Frustrated I grab my jacket and walk out.
"Jasper Nathaniel Wentworth, where are you going?"
"To think," I shout.
Nine months later
I get Alexandra to the emergency room as quickly as I can. There is obviously something wrong as she begins to bleed. As soon as we were inside, they rush her into the operating room for an emergency procedure, and I was left to wait outside. As I sit here in the waiting room of the hospital, my impatience is growing by the minute. I can feel the frustration radiating through my body as I wait for news of Alexandra's condition.
"Sit, son." Mark, Alexandra's father tells me. "Everything will be okay."
As the doctor walks in, I draw in a slow, steady breath. The expression on his face provides all of the information that I require. It is one of sympathy, one that conveys the bad news before the words ever leave his mouth.
"I'm sorry,"
In that instant, as I step back and take a seat, my life seems to blur into incoherence. My eyes well up with tears, and I don't pay attention to a word that the doctor says after that. A feeling of helplessness and sadness overwhelms me, as I begin to understand the severity of the situation.
"Jasper," Athena, Alex's mom says. I look up and the doctor looks at me.
"Would you like to see your son's?"
With a sigh and a nod, I dry my eyes. I follow the nurse down to the infants' room. Two tiny humans, asleep next to each other, makes my heart shatter. How can I, a kid who was raised in the system, possibly provide for them? My doubts are quickly extinguished by a wave of determination.
"Skin to skin, is best," The nurse informs me.
I remove my shirt and then sit down as the nurse places the twins in my arms and brings them close to my chest. They both yawn and fidget, and I can't help but crack a grin at their antics. I take a moment to take them in, marveling at their small hands and tiny toes.
"I have no idea what we will do, but know that I love you both and will do anything I can to make sure you are taken care of." I whisper as a tear escapes and travels down my cheek.
Athena and Mark walk in with a cheerful expression, even though a day that was meant to be memorable has been tarnished by the death of their daughter. In spite of the fact that Alexandra is no longer with us, Athena assures me that the twins are a gift, and that Alexandra will forever live on within them.
They ask to hold the babies and I agree. Each holding one, Athena asks,
"Do they have names?"
"Alexander and Nathaniel."
They both smile, and I can feel my stomach turning in anticipation. When I think about how I'm going to get through this, all I can do is look at my boys and hope that everything turns out okay. I take a deep breath and remind myself of the strength I know we all posse.
Present Day
While I stand in front of the mirror, I adjust the knot in my tie. I can hear the boys giggling to themselves as they run around. I sincerely hope that they have already dressed and are prepared to go to school. As I make my way into the kitchen, I see them circling the island and having a good time. I take a deep breath, knowing that I have to act quickly if we are going to make it in time for school.
"Boys, come on. Eat, I have to get to work and you need to get to school."
"Okay, Dad." They both say.
I pick up my phone and tell Earl my driver to bring the car around. I open the doors to the house and make sure the boys have their belongings with them before we head out to the waiting vehicle.
As I make my way to work, I can't help but think about the girl I ran into the day before. She was the most stunning being I'd ever had the pleasure of gazing upon. We arrive at the office building with my name prominently displayed on the front of the structure. My bodyguard, David, gets out of the front seat of the car and leads the way as we enter the building.
After making my way up to my office, I am greeted by my secretary, June, who tells me that my first applicant will be arriving at nine in the morning. Gisselle is standing there when I push open the wooden doors to my office to reveal that she is wearing a form-fitting black dress. Her blonde hair is pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and her face is caked in make-up.
"Hey, handsome."
"Hi," I say as I walk past her and put my briefcase on my desk.
"Oh, is this how you treat your fiancé?"
"This-" I rub my head, "what is happening between us, is just a business transaction. I'm only marrying you to take your daddy's company." I sternly tell her as I take a seat at my desk.
She walks behind me and rubs my shoulders and whispers,
"But I can make you feel so good,"
She leans in and kisses my ear, fully aware that there is no way a man could ever refuse sex. On the other hand, as luck would have it, the phone in my office rings.
"Ya?"
"Your Nine O'clock is here Mr. Wentworth." June says on the other end.
"Send them in."
I tell Gisselle it's time for her to leave as a knock on the door catches our attention. I stand up and fix my suit. Gisselle looks up at me with a shocked expression, clearly not expecting this sudden end to our morning.
"Come in,"
The door swings open, and out steps the world's most stunning woman. Any man would want to be next to a woman who looks like her, with long brown hair, dark eyes, luscious lips, and a body like hers. She wears a crimson dress that is form-fitting and pairs it with black heels. Her tresses have been tucked discreetly behind her ears. When she looks at me, her eyes get very big as she sees a smile on my face.
