(Stark Tower, Y/n's POV)
Stark is quickly tossed through a window, discarded as he won't be of use.
I emerge from my hiding place and run to Loki.
"What happens now? What's next?"
"Next..... Is the main event."
He leads me outside to where there is some sort of mechanism being fuelled by the Tesseract.
"Who are you?" I ask the newcomer as I let the electricity crackle between my fingers.
"Selvig," he says as he raises his hands in surrender. "It's okay, I'm working with Loki. In fact, you're just in time. Ready to light this thing up?"
"Ready when you are."
Selvig reaches over to the contraption and pulls one of the levers, sending a thick blue beam of light into the sky.
"What is it?"
"That, darling, is a portal."
"For the Chitauri."
"Exactly."
I look up into the air as hundreds of cybernetically enhanced creatures come falling through the hole and into our atmosphere.
"So? What do we do now?"
"Now," he peers over the edge at the army of monsters that floods the city, "we wait up here until our big moment."
I'm not sure what to say. I'm not even certain as to which side I stand. Which side I fight for.
The only thing I can think to do right now is to look in his head. See what he means to do with me if we win. If he wins.
He thinks this will be an easy fight. That regardless of who is fighting against the army, they're too strong. The Chitauri will destroy this city and everyone in it. Loki is expecting a showdown. And with me on his side, he thinks it's an easy win.
"You're using me," I gasp and step back.
He sighs and turns to face me, "Darling, I did warn you that your little party trick would get boring. No, I'm not using you. Well, I am, but only for this. Your power would give us a huge advantage, and we would fight side by side. We would win side by side."
"No, you.... I would win for you..... You think I could take out the Avengers. You'd toss me aside once you were done with me..... Or maybe keep me locked up until you needed to use me again. It's not happening! I've been locked up once before, I won't let it happen again!"
I move away from him, then grasp my head with a cry as it starts to burn.
"Y/n? What's wrong?"
Is that genuine concern on his face?
"I don't...... I don't know."
The marble floor is cool on my face as I fall to the ground.
I'm down on my knees, screaming in agony after being struck with a cattle prod.
"I don't think you're really trying," Doctor List says as he nears his face to mine.
"I am," I gasp out. "I swear I'm trying."
Cold sweat drips down my back and my damp hair is stuck down on my head.
"I suggest you try harder. Do it again."
"I ca.... I can't. I can't do it."
He presses the cattle prod to my leg once more, and my whole body connects with the ground as pain flows through me.
"Stop!" I scream.
I channel the little strength I have left into reversing the electrical current, causing the affect to show on List as he convulses on the floor from the prod, and I get a moment's relief.
As he lies there, breathless, I manage to push myself off the ground, and I stand above him.
"I warned you to stop."
"How...... dare you," his face is bright red with fury and exertion.
"No. How dare you."
When he extends his hand to once more put me in pain, I cross my arms in front of me in a defensive stance, and an electrical shield forms before me.
List stands shakily, but there's a triumphant smile on his face.
"There. I knew you could do it."
There's a small pinch as something hits me in the back, but before I can see what it is, my whole world goes dark.
