(Quinjet, Y/n's POV)
We're all relatively quiet on the way back. Romanoff is at the front, piloting the aircraft, and Steve and Tony are talking to one side in hushed voices.
I'm sat facing Loki.
He's bound together at his wrists and ankles, and he's kneeling on the floor. Staring at me. Still.
"I know your face," he says to me quietly. "Why do I know your face? Who are you?"
"I'd rather not have my name on your tongue thank you very much."
"Hmm....." He cocks his head to one side. "I think I might know it already. Your power is unmatched. A Hydra experiment, if I'm not mistaken. You went to List-"
"I did not go to List," I hiss at him. "List took me."
I notice Steve and Tony's heads turn slightly in our direction, and I quickly shut up. Loki, however, doesn't.
"List doesn't just take people. Unless you've gone to him yourself, he shouldn't have any reason to take an interest. Unless......" His eyes focus and his grin widens. "Unless you made yourself known to him. Oh yes, I know exactly who you are."
"You know nothing," I snap at him and stand up, quickly moving to another area of the jet.
Steve glances at Loki before making his way over to me. The evil grin from his face never slips as Rogers passes him.
"Hey. You okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine," I say as I wipe away a few stray angry tears.
"Are you sure? Seems like he uh, stirred up some bad memories."
"I said I'm fine, Rogers."
"Right. Got it. It's just that, you know, if something happened at Hydra, or you know something that could help with the mission, it might be good for you to speak to someone."
I can feel Loki's eyes on me. He's listening to every word we're saying.
"Listen, nobody cared when I was stuck at Hydra, and I'm fine with nobody caring now. I'm not talking about it, and that's that."
"But if it helps the mission-"
"I'm not talking about it!" It's a familiar feeling as the electricity crackles between my fingers.
"Hey! Calm down kid," Stark stalks over to us.
"Butt out Tin Man, this is none of your business."
"Okay first of all, ouch. It's Iron Man thank you very much. Second of all, Rogers is trying to help. We're all just trying to help. Cuz if we don't, then the world might end. Got it?"
"I don't care if my sob story helps the mission or not, you're not getting anything out of me. So you can fuck off and mind your own business. Got it?" I mirror his words and his attitude, hoping he'll back off.
When he looks as though he's going to say something else, I walk over to Loki and sit down next to him, and he grins at the two men stood looking at us.
"Great, now she's with the enemy. We supposed to lock her up too?"
"Would you guys shut up?" Romanoff calls from the front. "Director Fury's calling."
Stark and Rogers both look at us once more, before going to the front of the jet where Natasha is looking at the screen image of Fury.
"So-"
"I'm not on your side, I'm not your friend, I'm just doing this to make a point. So shut up before I light you up like a Christmas tree."
He laughs, then shuts his mouth, not wanting to see if I'll make good on my threat or not.
"He saying anything?" I hear Fury say through the speaker.
"Nothing yet that's been at all useful," Romanoff says in a bored tone. "We'll get stuff out of him, don't you worry."
"Just get him here," he intructs. "We don't have enough time for you lot to be playing games with him."
"Roger that sir, we're on our way."
She ends the call and makes a sharp turn in the air, our course now a straight line to the Shield base.
It's quiet. Too quiet.
"How did you get away?" Loki whispers in my ear, making me jump. "List keeps a close eye on his volunteers-"
"I wasn't a volunteer."
"Sorry. On his subjects. So how did you escape?"
"How about you mind your own business?"
"You know, we could work together. Me and you. You don't need this lot. You could be great, stood by my side."
I see in his mind that his top goal is to bring the world to submission. To the Chitauri. To him. He doesn't care who dies in the process.
"And why exactly would I do that?"
"Call it revenge. After all, Shield's ultimate mission is to bring peace and safety to everyone. Think about what you had to endure. Where were they then? Were they keeping you safe? I don't think so. Their words are empty, they care about themselves."
I mean, he's not wrong.
"The Tesseract, the power of the Tesseract, it can make you feel a peace you've never known. You will have the understanding of what it means to live in freedom."
"I've seen the power of the Tesseract," I say coldly. "Just look what it did to me. It made me violent, unstable. I can't control my power."
"Because you don't understand it."
"I do. And no matter how much you think you know about me, you don't know everything."
I peek at his thoughts as he looks confused, and I see his recollection of a conversation with Doctor List. He's showing Loki the equipment he's using on me. The power bank. Industrially sized power bank. But my electricity isn't the power that the Tesseract gave me, it only enhanced it. From the Tesseract, I got my ability to read people's minds. But he doesn't seem to know that.
"Perhaps I don't know everything. But I know that you're as strong as I am. Or, you could be. With the proper training. I can help you with that."
I don't know what to think. I don't know who here I can really trust. Romanoff never told me what this mission was until it was too late, and I feel as though that wasn't a mistake. If she knew I was from Hydra, she wouldn't want to tell me that we're hunting the Tesseract. Stark seems arrogant and obnoxious, I couldn't imagine him caring about anyone but himself. And sadly, Loki is right. Shield wasn't there for me when I needed them, so why should I help them? It's not as if I owe them. If anything, they owe me.
"Well?"
There's a clap of thunder from outside that turns both of our heads towards the window.
So this was the calm before the storm.
Got it.
