(New York, Y/n's POV)
"Stark, you got a lot of Chitauri on your tail."
"I got it Barton, don't you worry. I'm just tryna keep them off the street."
Hawkeye fires arrow after arrow, taking down their small aircrafts one by one.
The Chitauri start falling like leaves from the sky, littering the ground around me.
"I've got a squadron here on 6th," Thor says in our ears.
"And you didn't invite me?" Tin Man mutters, and I grin as I see him go past over my head in the direction of Thor.
Hulk is chasing after a Leviathan that's heading straight for an office building full of civilians. He manages to grab it by the tail and yank it away before tearing it in two, completely destroying the machine.
Romanoff is getting tackled to the ground by a Chitauri, but she uses her Widow's Bite on him and he ends up on his back. Dead.
She snatches his gun from the ground and whirls around to aim it at the approacher from behind.
"Hey, easy," Rogers puts his hands up, and I run over to join the two of them.
"This is great and all, but none of it's gonna mean anything unless we can get that portal closed."
"She's right Cap," Romanoff nods in agreement. "How do we close it? Our biggest guns barely touched the barrier."
"Maybe it's not about guns," I say. "What did Thor say the barrier is?"
"Some sort of electrical shield....." Rogers replies, then turns to look at me.
"Electrical huh?"
"Do you think you could get up there and shut it off?"
"Well yeah I reckon so. I just need to get back up there, then I can reverse the charge, send the power right back to the source."
"Isn't the source the Tesseract?" Romanoff asks. "If you send the charge back into it, then surely it'll have twice the amount of charge as it had initially. Wouldn't the thing be overpowered?"
"Probably."
"And what would happen to the Tesseract itself?"
"I don't know, my best guess would be it explodes and releases the energy. It would likely cause a small earthquake, but it would take out the Chitauri at least."
Rogers interrupts us, "No. Absolutely not. We need it to stay in one piece so we can hand it over to Fury. What's our other options?"
"How many do you think we have? The longer we're discussing it, the longer the portal stays open, and more of those creatures pass through. The only other thing I can think of is absorbing the power myself."
"What'll that do to you?"
"No clue. But I'm the only one of us who is even able to take it. If any of you tried to, it'd kill you."
"It might kill you."
"Well you all thought I died once already, who cares if I actually do."
Rogers and Romanoff share a guilty look, but then he nods to me. "Alright, it's worth a shot. And we got nothing else, so we may as well try it."
"Duck!" Natasha shouts, and I drop as she shoots a Chitauri that was heading straight for me.
I don't bother to thank her, it's the least she could do for me.
"Hey Tin Man," I say into the earpiece. "You busy?"
"Always. What's up?"
"Don't suppose you could give me a boost up to the Tower could you?"
"Uhhhh, I got a space eel with me, can I bring it to you?"
"Bring it over," Rogers says. "We'll deal with it."
"Alright, be right with you."
"It's a Leviathan," I mutter. It goes unheard.
We take out the Chitauri around us, Rogers with his shield, Romanoff with her gun and Widow's Bite, and I'm just using brute force.
It's kinda fun.
"Head's up!"
Stark flies low over our heads with the 'space eel' hot on his heels.
Rogers jumps up and connects its face with the front of his shield, sounding out an almighty metallic clang.
I channel my power down to my hands, and push it upwards from my palms and into the creature, the circuits in it frying instantly.
"Nice job," he says as he lands next to me.
"Thanks Tin Man. Shall we go put a stop to this?"
"Yeah, I reckon so. Hop on kid."
I jump onto his back, suppressing my laugh at how ridiculous this is, and his boosters project us up however many floors there are in his Tower, and we land a few feet from the Tesseract.
"Loki's out on the field," I say to him. "I need you to keep Selvig busy, and Loki if he turns up. It shouldn't take long, just make sure they don't stop me."
"You got it."
"And don't kill either of them."
"........ Fine."
"Thanks Tin Man."
He just rolls his eyes in response.
"Selvig?" I call as I walk nearer, "I need you to step away."
"What's going on y/n?"
"I'm sorry, but it's over. I have to shut it off now."
"Loki's orders?"
"I don't take orders from anyone, I'm just trying to do what's right."
"But the Tesseract..... The plan..... We're bringing peace. We're going to make everyone understand."
"Listen to me Selvig, I've seen first-hand the power of the Tesseract. I've felt it. It's not peace. It's going to cause a war. And-"
He falls to the floor, unconscious, to reveal Tin Man stood behind him.
"Stark!"
"What? Cognitive recalibration. He's gonna be fine."
"One less thing to worry about I suppose. Now just keep a look out for-"
"Y/n!"
"Oh for fuck's sake," I roll my eyes. "Impeccable timing Loki."
"Come on darling, don't do something you'll regret."
"I have to. I can't let you destroy the city."
"Why are you helping them? They left you to burn."
"Now listen here-"
"It's not about them," I interrupt Tin Man. "This is about the hundreds of civilians who'll die if I let this carry on any longer."
"I see. So you've decided to stand against me."
"It's not like that! You could help, do the right thing."
"This is the right thing. This is how I will get my throne."
"Then I'm sorry, but you won't be getting your throne."
Stark steps forward to take him on, but there's a loud thud as two large green feet land on the ledge behind Loki.
Hulk. Smash.
