I snort as my eyes open, and move to swat the blanket away from my face. My instincts were trying to kill me off. How could something bring me so much comfort also bring me to an early death?
As I rip the blanket away from my face, I suck in a big breath of air. I push my staticky hair away from my face and grunt.
Then I noticed the high ceiling and natural wood. I sit up in a flash and wildly look around the room.
My eyes catch on a smudge of white. Ares sits in a chair across from me, his elbows on his knees and his head on his hands. He stares at me under furrowed brows, but amusement dances in his eyes.
"I told you." He says quietly.
I let out a breath of air as my mind catches up to where I am. "You told me what?" I say a little breathlessly.
He studies me closely. "That you were going to suffocate yourself."
My breathing evens out and I relax back into where I had fallen asleep on the couch. "I've heard of worse ways to go than dying in your sleep."
He gives me a funny look. "Do you always do that?"
"What?"
"Act like nothing can hurt you. Talk like nothing effects you." Ares says.
I give him a funny look this time. "Do you always do that? Analyze people."
"You're doing it right now." Ares says.
When I don't reply, he stands up from his seat. He has put on some gray sweats and a black t-shirt. As he walks toward me, I let my eyes travel down and back up his body.
I meet his eyes and he holds my gaze. "You had your nap. Food is next."
I resist the urge to roll my eyes. "I'm not starving to death."
His eyes sweep my body. "I was very close to you earlier. Your bones are practically sticking out."
My eyes flash down to his crotch and quickly back up. "I wasn't the only one."
His mouth goes slack and his blue eyes glint a shade darker. A laugh explodes out of him and I jump in surprise. Ares' smile shows all of his teeth, white and straight. He directs that smile at me and my heart stalls.
"I was trying my hardest to keep a grip on myself." He says, still smiling.
I eye him for a moment, seeing how far I wanted to go with this. "Maybe that's the problem. You try a little too hard."
Ares full-out grins at me. "Damn." He shakes his head and gestures for me to follow him. "Come on."
I step up from the couch, only to trip on the multitude of blankets surrounding me. As I tilt toward the ground, Ares turns around at the speed of light and scoops me into his arms. The gasp that was ready in my mouth instantly dies.
Ares looks down at me, his eyes slightly wide. "You okay?"
Tingles were racing through my body, and I was reminded of what it felt like earlier when he had briefly kissed me. I realized I was only wearing a shirt, nothing on underneath. It was one the boys, so it hit my knees, but it was breezy. My eyes flick down to his lips then back up. I close my mouth and swallow. Ares tracks the movement of my throat with a predatory gleam.
He slowly looks back up at me, his eyes leaving a trail of fire over my exposed skin that they land on. His eyebrows lower. "Food." Ares voice is rough and gravelly. "You need food."
I nod sharply.
He leans away from me and helps me to my feet. I have to force the air into my lungs, not even realizing that I had stopped breathing entirely. Once I'm steady on my feet, Ares lets go of my hand and steps away from me, distancing himself from me. He leads me to the kitchen, and we keep the distance between us.
