A World Alone- Lorde

Cara woke up bright eyed and ready to face the day. Her alarm rang promptly at 8:30. Moving out of bed, she peeled back to curtains and opened her window to let the morning sunlight and breeze in before the heat settled in for the day. Climbing out of her window, Cara let her body awaken with the sun and enjoy her surroundings.

Soon enough, Cara skipped out of her room to find Bucky and Steve sitting at the table drinking coffee and eating eggs and toast. She smiled at both guys, who were still half asleep, and they nodded at her.

"Well aren't you in a good mood?" Bucky watched her put leftover eggs on her plate and push a piece of bread in the toaster. She nodded happily, practically jumping up and down for today.

"I'm a very big morning person." Cara smiled again before buttering her toast and sitting cross cross in the empty chair next to Steve, who was in the zone drawing a hillbilly play a trombone. Cara giggled at the picture. "Looks good!" Cara rested her hand breifly on Steve's shoulder, acknowledging his art, making him jump. He mumbled a thanks before rushing to get ready, leaving Cara utterly confused.

"He gets really shy about other people seeing his pictures," Bucky gave her a brief explanation and she nodded in understanding. "What are you all giddy about?"

"I'm excited to see my new coworker, Gwen, again. She is so sweet!" Cara finished off her plate before running off to get ready.

She chose a simple sage green button up top with ivory trousers, and a pair of black flats since she would be on her feet most of the time. She pulled her hair into a loose braid on the side of her head. She used her new baby pink ribbon to tie it. Her makeup consisted of blush, vaseline on her eyelashes, and a subtle lip tint. Simple yellow gold earrings adorned her ears and her vanilla scented perfume was the finishing touch.

It was 9:40, and the walk to the shop was about 10 minutes, so Cara decided to take her leave for the day. Both guys were still sitting at the table, since Bucky really hadn't found a temporary job yet, and Steve had class in 2 hours. Cara put one arm around each of them from behind, hugging both at the same time.

"I'll be back around 3:00! See you later!" Grabbing her purse, Cara was out the door. The air that day was much cooler, letting her enjoy the gentle breeze for a while. People moved around her with purpose, but she paid them no mind. Her sunglasses sat on the bridge of her nose, helping to block out the bright sun. In her line of sight she could see the coffee shop with a few customers walking in.

The bell rang when she pushed the door open, making Gwen's head pop up and smile before serving a customer.

"Basically your job today is just go around and check on everyone in the shop, see if they need anything, pretty much just waitress. Around lunch time people shuffle in and out and I will need your help at the counter, until it calms down again, but things are pretty steady otherwise." Gwen was out of breath but smiled and handed Cara a black apron and a coffee pot.

The day went pretty smoothly, and only one customer threw a fit about not being served fast enough. Once it was around 1:00, there weren't many people and Gwen and Cara sat on the counter together.

"So where are you from?" Gwen was eating a muffin that was leftover from the day before.

"Charlotte. The only reason I'm actually able to live here is because I'm rooming with my cousin." Cara crossed her ankles before taking a piece of muffin. There was only one person sitting in the back of the store with his head in a book, furiously scribbling into a notepad. Gwen caught her line of sight and hummed.

"He comes in like every other day and stays for hours, always scratching into that notepad. I want to know what's so important about it."

Cara said nothing, instead getting off the counter and tying her apron back on to go check on him. Grabbing the coffee pot, she slowly walked over, hoping to catch his attention, but he was off in his own little world. Cara stood right in front of him, but he did not notice anything. She gently tapped his coffee cup, making him jump and slide his hand over his notepad, covering the writing. His head whipped up, and his hair fell in his face. He had small squinty eyes and a full mustache. His brown hair was swept to the side and his button up shirt was slightly pulled up at the sleeves.

"Everything alright? Would you like some more coffee?" The man hesitated for a moment before nodding, signaling for her to fill the cup up. "Anything else I can get you Misterr?" Cara droned on, hoping he would tell her his name.

"Howard. And I'm fine, thank you though." He gave Cara a tight lipped smile before going back to his notes. Cara caught a small glimpse of his pages before he bent his head forward. They looked like chemical equations. She smiled one last time before turning to Gwen with wide eyes.

"He's odd." Cara whispered in hopes of not attracting his attention. Gwen just nodded at her before sorting the register.

When Cara walked home, the streets were filled with people coming home from their day jobs. The sky was cloudy, and not much sun was peeking through. It looked like it was about to storm.

Cara hated storms. She loved rain, but hated thunder. When she was 11, she wanted to accompany her father to work, but he didn't want her to get hurt, so he set her by the entrance of the mine and told her to play by herself. Obviously, she did not listen, deciding instead to wander to the nearby lake, Lake Norman. On the way back, she got lost and a severe thunderstorm broke out, resulting in her being stuck in the forest for 5 hours alone before her father found her. Ever since then, she had an irrational fear of thunder.

Walking back through the streets, a raindrop hit the bridge of her nose. Suddenly in a panic, Cara sped up her pace, and made her way to the apartment building. Sheets of rain came down just as Cara stepped into the safety of the front door. Shaking, Cara went to her room to get ready for the night.

No thunder or lightning had appeared even after she showered, so Cara took that as a good sign. She would be alright alone. Cara had settled on wearing her red pajama set for the night before pulling her hair into two dutch braids, starting on the food. Cara never wanted to live the housewife lifestyle, but the boy's definition of food is not edible half of the time. The cabinets were almost bare, and Cara wasn't surprised with how much Steve struggled financially. Maybe if he had more food he would finally put on some weight.

Settling in with what she had, Cara decided to make a Whoolton pie. The pie was almost finished baking when Steve and Bucky walked through the door, dripping from head to toe. Both boys were out of breathe, obviously trying to run to the door. Steve had quickly ran to his room to take off his wet clothes and change, but Bucky took a moment to breath, tilting his head back. Cara took the moment to shamelessly look at his abs through his now soaked white button up. Bucky immediately noticed and winked at her before moving to his duffle bag on the living room floor and pulling out dry clothes, walking into the bathroom.

Cara was turning pink, but decided to focus instead on the food that was done cooking. The kitchen smelled good as soon as she took the pie out of the oven. Cara truly hoped the boys would like the food, but they don't have much of an option considering this was all that was in the cabinets.

Steve walked into the kitchen with a beige henley shirt and plaid pants, a washcloth on his head, him trying to dry his hair. As soon as he smelled the kitchen, his eyes closed.

"Thank god you made food. I was about to live off of my second plate of eggs for the day." Steve leaned back against the counter, taking a deep breath.

"Are you alright?" Steve hummed for a moment. Cara knew the boy was going to a recruitment station again, but guessing by his mood it obviously did not go very well.

"You should get some sleep tonight. You look tired." Steve hummed again, but Bucky walked out before she could say anything else. He was now wearing a similar pair of plaid pants and a black cashmere sweater. He saw the pie and his eyes widened before smiling.

"You spoil us, doll." He wrapped an arm around her shoulder before reaching behind her head and grabbing plates.

This night was off to a good start.
