TV - Billie Eilish
The velvet couch in Winter's living had a bad first impression, but recently Cara had been over a lot. She enjoyed Winter's blunt honesty and Georgia's cute southern belle accent that reminded her of the people in Charlotte. At the moment, all three girls were sitting on the living room floor pigging out on cookies and gossiping.
"Wait, so he came back from boot camp completely jacked?" Cara was telling them what happened earlier in the morning, leaving out the crazy details. She didn't want to spill anything that could get him hurt.
"Yeah, it was insane. He looked like a different person." Cara grabbed a snickerdoodle out of the jar, crossing her legs.
"I mean, if I wasn't completely attracted to women, I would jump his bones, he sounds hot." Winter spoke nonchalantly, but Cara and Georgia both choked on their cookies.
"Oh my god, ew! That's my cousin!" Cara playfully shoved Winter, who was laughing behind a chocolate chip cookie.
"What about your little soldier man? When does he come back?" Cara broke her cookie in half.
"Two months. We're doing good." Cara bit her lip. thinking about Bucky.
"What's got you down honey?" Georgia bumped Cara's shoulder gently. Her eyes watered slightly.
"It's so hard being away from him for so long. Things are so so good when he's here, but then he has to leave again before we can even do anything special. I love that he fights for his country, but I miss having him here. I guess seeing Steve and Darla just made me miss him even more." A tear rolled down her cheek as she wrapped her arms around her knees.
"How long has he been gone?"
"God, I can't even remember, it's been so long." Winter huffed lightly in understanding.
"I could never go that long without getting down and dirty." Cara's face dropped, lifting her head slowly.
"What?" Winter just hummed, looking for another chocolate chip.
"Yow know, knocking boots, shaking sheets. I barely last a month." Winter seemed unfazed. Georgia just smacked her arm, hinting to something that Winter didn't pick up on.
"I know what you mean," Cara's eyes watered much faster as her breathing picked up. "Oh god, do you think he's going out with other girls?" She felt her tears fall down her cheeks as she buried her head into her arms.
"Oh god, no Cara! He loves you so much honey!" Georgie rubbed her back and kicked Winter's leg at the same time.
"No, that's just me Cara. I bet he's so loyal, with the way he writes to you. He obviously loves you so much!" Winter tried her best to console her, but the rest of the night Cara only thought of one thing. Is he being loyal?
Even when she went back to the apartment to see Steve off, she couldn't shake the chilling thought. Stopping at the mailbox, she pulled out her letter before it could be mailed. She knew she was probably just paranoid, but the thought of the letter going out made her nauseous.
Walking through the door, she was greeted with Steve hugging Darla tightly, not ready to let go. He would never be ready to let go. Soon enough, Cara found her way to him, wrapping her family in a bone-crushing hug. He gladly returned the hug, resting his chin on her head.
"I'll miss you, you big dummy." Cara pulled away to shove his shoulder lightly.
"Yeah yeah, I'll miss you to, bambi." Steve rolled his eyes playfully. After a moment, he moved to grab his bag and walk out the door, stopping to look back and smile at them. He was gone in a flash.
"I love him so much." Cara looked over to smile at Darla, but her eyes immediately zoned in on the ring on her finger. The blonde yanked Darla's hand to her face, inspecting the ring. It previously belonged to Sarah. The ring itself was modest and dainty with a gold band and a small diamond, but the fact that he gave her something of his mother's was huge. Steve was reluctant to keep photos up in the off event that they would be ruined by something.
"How? When!? I need every detail!" Cara yanked the twirly brunette to the couch. She just smiled giddily, looking at the ring with a dreamy expression.
"We finished dinner and were at the table when he said he had something for me. He pulled out an envelope and handed it to me, saying he was going to mail it but wanted me to see it in person. When I opened it, I saw a drawing of us at the alter, and when I looked back he was on one knew in front of me, asking me to marry him!" Darla spinned around on the floor, jumping with excitement. Cara jumped with her, squealing loudly.
"Oh my god, Cara will you be my maid of honor?" Darla looked at her with a twinkle in her eye.
"Of course I will!" The two girls spent the rest of the night celebrating Darla and Steve, cracking open a bottle of wine and playing a board game.
"Are you sure you don't want to go out and do something?" Cara looked at Darla through the glass of her drink. Dalra nodded her head no firmly.
"Nuh-uh. I would rather stay in and think about wedding ideas. Holy crap, I get to wear a wedding dress." Darla daydreamed about what kind of dress she wanted to wear. "I was thinking something simple, but elegant." Cara smiled fondly, nodding along with her. She never told Darla about what Winter suggested, deciding to keep the focus on the new engagement. It was eating her alive. Bucky would never hurt her like that, she knew it. She trusted him completely, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't enough for him. She knew the stories of him constantly going out with different girls, never going over a few dates, except for Dot. Apparently she burned him bad, making him never want a relationship again.
A piece of popcorn hitting her face made her jump. "Earth to Caroline!" Darla tilted her head slightly, silently questioning the blonde.
"Sorry, what?" Cara whispered, spooked out of her head. Darla just furrowed her brows.
"Are you alright?" No matter how much she tried to keep it from Darla, she knew she couldn;t lie to her. Cara took a deep breath.
"Last night I was talking with Winter and Georgia about Buck being gone for so long and Winter said she couldn't go that long without getting with someome," Cara widened her eyes at the words, making Darla raise her eyebrows and nod for her to continue. "I guess it just got in my head thinking Bucky would get with another girl. I know he would never do that to me, but I just can't get rid of that sinking feeling that I'm not enough when I'm not there with him." Cara got quiet at the end of her sentence, fiddling with the hem of her shirt. Darla scooted closer to her.
"I've known the man for over a year now, and I can promise you that boy is head over heels in love with you. He literally spends the whole night cuddling your pillow and using your blanket when you spend the night at Winter's. He can barely stand being away from you, what makes you think you aren't enough for him?" Cara giggled at the thought of Bucky cuddling her pillow.
"I couldn't bring myself to send the letter earlier today." Cara got up to go outside and put the letter in the mailbox.
"Well while you do that, I'm going to clean up and go dream about my hunky blonde fiance." Darla winked, making Cara gag before closing the door behind her and padding down the stairs to the mailboxes, reaching up to open the latch with her keys. Her face dropped when the mailbox was wet and she felt rain hit her nose. Scrambling, she locked the letter in and ran back to the apartment.
Sitting in her bed, Cara though about the days her and Bucky would spend together. They both agreed their first date when he gets back would be the movies. Cara tried to bury herself in her blanket when she heard a rigid storm roll through the dark sky. Instead of trying to sleep, Cara decided to read one of Bucky's books, The Hobbit. She spent the rest of the night immersed in the story, wishing he was here to read it to her.
