Base Quest

Sophie's POV:

I jumped up and down in front of the gates at Everglen. Grizel stood guard to the right of the gates and asked me no further questions than "What are you doing?" I waited for Fitz to come up so we could go to his backyard and play Base Quest.

"What's all the excitement about?" He asked, punching in the password to open the gate. The gate swung inward and I walked in excitedly. It shut behind us with a clang and we continued down the sideyard to the backyard.

"So...What was the real reason you came here?" He asked.

"What do you mean the real reason?" I asked nervously.

"I know you like coming here and hanging out, but you haven't in a long time and you looked like you were stressed out. There is another reason you're here isn't there?"

"...Yes, I was going to get my matchmaking packet after this," I said.

"Well, that's great news," He said and gave me his flashy smile and I felt my heart flutter.

"Yeah, and I was wondering if you'd go with me?"

"Sure, of course, I'll-"

"Guys sorry to interrupt your romantic scene here, that could wait, but Base Quest cannot," Keefe said, holding his arms out in front of him. "Biana and I have already set it up, the traps our sprung and everything, we've all been looking for you guys."

"Sorry," Fitz said. "We're coming."

He grabbed my hand (Which made me nearly jump) and pulled me along, trailing behind Keefe. We made it to the forest where Biana, Keefe, Tam, Dex, and Linh were crowding around the trees in a semi-circle.

"Okay guys we have all gone over the rules multiple times," Keefe started. "THERE ARE NO RULES."

We quickly picked two teams and gathered on the opposite side of the line. I was on a team with Keefe, Biana, and Dex, and Tam Linh and Fitz were on a team.

Linh summoned a wave of water but her attempt was useless, the water was too far away it only gave us a refreshing drizzle. I was hiding in between two oak trees far enough away so they couldn't see me but close enough so I could still hear them.

Where are you, Sophie? Fitz thought, trying to find what I was thinking to do.

You will have to find out, I thought as I slowly crept across the middle line. I was crouching behind the line of trees that I felt would keep me hidden the best. They had branches coming out from all angles but not too many that made a lot of noise. The trunks of the trees had strong roots and they were wide, covering me from the side and making sure I could lean against them for support. I turned my walk into a light jog until I finally saw the flag.

I cautioned my approach, assuming there would be someone guarding it that was hiding. I waded into the thoughts inside my head and listened for anything that stood out but nothing grabbed my attention. I continued down the path until I was in a ten-foot radius when I heard rustling from behind me.

I turned just in time to see shadows shrouding the light, consuming it. Once it reached me I couldn't see anything. I punched the air around me (seeing if Tam was close by) when something came up behind me and knocked me over the head and all I saw was black when I hit the ground. I woke up just in time to see the dark just starting to fade, everything looked the same but I had so many questions. Where was Tam? How long had I been asleep?

I figured I hadn't been asleep too because I still saw the flag swaying in the wind in between the trees. I looked all around me because I did not want the same thing to happen to me again. I slowly crept across the barren ground and tugged the flag out of place. I raised it up high, screamed my war cry, and ran to my side of the field, the flag was raised behind me, sometimes getting stuck on tree branches and leaves. I made it across the middle line and heard my team cheer. I looked around and saw them along the side of our flag, guarding it protectively. I slowly came over to them and stopped when I reached them.

"What took you so long?" Fitz asked.

"I got knocked over the head by Tam," I said matter-of-factly.

"Well, good job getting the flag," Biana said.

"Yeah, good job," Keefe said. "We're the only reason you got the flag."

"Mm-Hhmm," I mumbled.

"Well, hey...WE STILL WON, LET'S GO SOPHIE!" Keefe exclaimed.

Later, the winning team got Ice cream (Which was a foreign thing to the rest of them) and the losing team had to clean up everything we spilled so Keefe purposely dropped all of his Ice cream.

It was the best thing I've ever had.
