"I just don't understand, dad. Why do they hate me so much? Shouldn't they be happy that you gave me a home?" Missy complained to her father who only sighed, looking at the woman beside him.

"Retta, what am I gonna do about this girl's temper?" Jeff laughed before eating some of the chicken on his plate.

They were all talking around Loretta's dining room table, enjoying a meal cooked by Missy and Loretta. Missy just didn't understand her father's biological kids and why they hated her and him so much. She tried asking them but all they did was cursed her and called her foul names for no reason. She was always told to give it time when she was younger, but now that she's older, she was starting to realize why they kept telling her. It was to protect her from the sad truth. They wanted nothing to do with her or her dad.

"Missy, sweetpea, I already told you not to worry about them. They just want attention from their old man, rather it's good or bad attention, they want it. I know my kids more than they know themselves." He laughs softly, rubbing her back, making her feel a bit annoyed.

"I don't worry about them! It's just irritating seeing them disrespect you when you've been nothing but kind and respectful towards them. It makes me want to beat their mother-" Missy's words trailed off when she saw Loretta glaring at her as if she was daring her to say it.

It always made her wonder why she couldn't curse someone out, but her mama always cursed someone out. She was getting to that age where these things would slip up now and then. Jefferson didn't care that she cursed but she knew her mama had an issue with it. She would always tell her a young woman shouldn't curse like an old drunken sailor.

"Their behinds." She covered up making Loretta nod her head agreeing with the choice of words.

"We can't fight every battle, Missy. Remember that." Jefferson said firmly before taking a bite of the cornbread.

"I know how strong you are, but I'm telling you right now there are other ways to fight, without it always having to end with throwing fists." He tells her before sipping the sweet tea they made before they started cooking.

"What? The restraining order?" she says, causing the old man to shake his head and sigh before tapping her hand on the table.

"Don't be a smartass." He told her, causing Mama Retta to gasp and hit his shoulder in a serious, but also playful manner.

Loretta crossed her arms and glared at her dad. "Now if I don't like her cussin', you shouldn't do it either!"

Jefferson laughed at her before holding Missy's shoulder in a family manner, making her smile at her father dearly. "She's growing up Retta, what's wrong with a few curse words."
