Driving fast on the highway, you think about summer and all the beautiful times, when you watched Tony laughing from the passenger side.
Although he didn't always approve of your taste in music, seeing you happy made him happy. He'd turn up the songs in the car or quinjet so you could sing more freely. Hearing you sing helped him calm. When he'd annoy you and you'd fire back, seeing you talk made him laugh. When he kissed you that night, the taste of your lips was his idea of luxury in which gave him comfort. He tried, despite his troubles, he tried. Even though you didn't notice, he gave you all his love and all you gave him was goodbye.
Your body was weak, your heart was aching. You knew you didn't love him like that but maybe if you had, maybe if you didn't push him to the edge then maybe, just maybe, he would've been safe and sound in your arms.
You see from the rear view mirror Steve in another cab following yours.
"Stop here please" you say to the cab driver, hopping out into the cold open air of dawn.
Streetlights were still gleaming, but pinning you down was the whirlwinds of guilt and regret, forcing yourself to walk through it. Steve gets out of the car behind you and runs after you.
"Y/N, stop!" He yells but you don't even look around.
Still walking as fast as you can you begin to clutch your chest, you were physically hurting.
"Y/N please just talk to me" he manages to catch up.
Resisting the urge to say 'on your left' he revolves around you. Noticing your pain he asks if your okay, but once again you shut him out.
"Just go Steve, please" you quietly whimper.
"No, no, no. Sweetheart I can't do that" he places his hand on your cheek and offers his blue eyes as a comfort "hey I'm here okay, and look I dont care what Pepper says. It's not your fault, so stop doing this to yourself" he says gently.
Squeezing your eyes shut, your bottom lip trembles. You were in the missle of an isolated street next to the lake, funny how the most loved landmarks are abandoned by the end of the day.
The sky was turning from black to navy to blue by the second, you saw the resemblance in Steve's eyes as you open your own which were fighting back tears."I can't do this anymore" your voice slightly cracks
"Wh- what do you mean?"
"I can't take it. I'm the reason for everything. M- m- my dreams- my n-nightmares-" you stop and take a deep breath
"Your nightmares, What about them?"
Steve encourages you to talk. You've never attempted to speak about them infront of anyone, it was something that hurt deeply, especially since you weren't sure how real they were. Now you were seeing the signs you realised they might be more than just nightmares, but visions into the future.
"Y/N?""No- no don't- don't go. Don't leave. Everybody leaves" you meet his eyes and begin to break down.
Finally giving in you make affordable to hug him but before you can get your own around him, Steve wraps his arms around your body. One hand around your waist and the other around your head, he pulls it tightly into his chest. Kissing the top of your head, you feel his tears drop with you.
"I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart. I won't ever leave you alone, you got that, I won't leave you"
"How do I not know you- you won't go like everyone else"
"Because I'm Forever Yours"
