"Thank you for everything. I'm sorry to of disturbed you in the middle of the night." Ember said to Mr Creevey.
Maddie was sitting on Nymeria's back. Nymeria's had grown herself to the size of a large hill. She looked behind her so she could nuzzle Maddie, trying to comfort her.
"No problem. If there's anything you need . . ." Mr Creevey said, looking between the two girls with sympathy.
"Thank you, but we'll be okay. Stay out of trouble, Dennis." Ember said as she waved goodbye and walked over to Nymeria and climbed on.
Nymeria took off into air, flying steadily.
"I want to go back." Maddie said.
"You can't keep staying over at Dennis's house." Ember said, trying to keep her voice gentle but feeling exasperated at how much Maddie wanted to be around Dennis. She wondered if this was how Sirius felt. "It worked out this time and because we're both already going through enough already is the main reason I'm giving you are pass just this once."
"No, I mean back to the orphanage." Maddie said.
"Maddie, are you sure –?" Ember said, disapprovingly.
"I need to see it." Maddie insisted.
Ember bit her lip in hesitation.
'It's nothing you haven't done, Ember. Like you're little trip last summer? Let her get some closure.' Nymeria linked. 'She's not a helpless child anymore. She'll be grown up soon and it will come faster then you think. Sheltering her won't do her any favours.'
'You're right.' Ember eventually agreed through the mind link. 'She's not the scared little girl she used to be. Like I used to be.'
"Okay, but brace yourself." Ember told Maddie. "You're not going to like what you're about to see."
Nymeria turned around in mid air and flew towards the orphanage.
Ember climbed off first and waited for Maddie. Maddie clung onto Nymeria's spikes, staring at the orphanage. At the damage that had been done. Nymeria gently nudged her with her snout. Maddie blinked. She patted Nymeria's snout and Nymeria purred. Maddie climbed off and walked towards the door. She hesitated. Ember put a hand on her shoulder. Maddie lplaced her own hand on top of Ember's ad squeezed it slightly. With a deep breath, Maddie ducked under the crooked door and Ember followed after her. Ember hung back, by the door. Giving her space. She knew better then most that in these situations, you don't like to feel crowded. You need space.
"You already came here didn't you?" Maddie asked and she talked so quietly Ember could barely make it out.
"When Sirius told me the body count, I knew one of you was alive and I thought it would be you but I had to make sure." Ember said gently.
