Katie was removed to St. Mungo's Hospital
for Magical Maladies and Injuries the following day, by which time the news that she had been cursed had spread all over the school, though the details were confused and nobody other than Harry, Ron, Ember, Hermione, and Leanne seemed to know that Katie herself had not been the intended target.

"Oh, and Malfoy knows, of course," said Harry to Ron and Hermione, who continued their new policy of feigning deafness whenever Harry mentioned his Malfoy-Is-a-Death-Eater theory.

And Ember had been around less and less, hoping to find an answer to cure Katie.

"She's wasting her time." Hermione sighed. "Elemental magic didn't do this to Katie. I don't think there's anything she can do."

"Well, you never know." Harry said frowning. "Maybe there is something in those books that can help, everyone always goes on about how powerful Elementals were."

"I think she's feeling pressured." Ron said.

"What are you talking about?" Hermione said.

"Neither of you really get it do you?" Ron sighed. "Elementals are stuff of legends. They're almost like gods. Everyone is expecting Ember to be able to do something. Everyone will now start looking to her for answers to all their problems."

"But - but that's so unrealistic! She's just one person!" Hermione insisted.

"I know that but to be honest Hermione, no one cares about that. They just want to see all the wonder and power that they heard about in the Elemental stories growing up. People still get up at the crack of dawn just so they can watch Ember train on Nymeria." Ron said.

Ron was right.

Ember poured over the Elemental books. She had not yet finished reading all the Water Elementals books but now she was skimming through them, looking for any mention of healing or dark curses. But nothing. She pushed the books away from her in frustration. She bit her nails anxiously.

'Ember.' Nymeria linked her.

'I already know what your going to say Nymeria. There has to be something I can do.' Ember lined back.

'There isn't. Contradictory to popular belief but Elementals aren't miracle workers. What happened to Katie had nothing to do with an element, least of all fire.' Nymeria linked.

'Or maybe . . .' Ember linked and her eyes darted to one of the books. 'I'm looking in the wrong place.'

Ember grabbed one of the fire Elemental books. Volume Three.

She flipped through towards the end of the book which before she had never dared to read.

The Forbidden Fire Forms.

Nymeria jumped off Ember's shoulder and landed on the book, stopping Ember from reading further.

'Ember.' Nymeria warned through their shared mind link.
