winter break over, everyone was hanging at the beach.

"so, av how's you and asher?" liv asked. "um it's ok i guess. ever since break, um it's been distant."

"you'll be fine. i can tell he's very interested in you." liv assured.

"yo layla. where's spence i need him." jordan asked. "i can fill in." avery said taking the football.

"you?" jordan asked. "don't act so suprised just watch."

"it's true!" layla added.

while asher and JJ talked. "dude you've been staring at avery for so long."

asher scoffed, "shut up."

they all went to play football. "i'm impressed avery." jordan said.

"my dad used to play football. what can i say?" avery shrugged. "yo asher, wifey material." jordan whispered.

afterschool she was with liv and layla at the cafe. "it's like were playing musical fathers. mine leaves, yours comes back." liv stated. "and mines gone." avery added.

it was silent. "it was a joke guys, you can laugh." avery chuckled.

avery noticed the encounter between the three boys. "guys give me a second."

"hey! can yall stop making a fucking fool of yourself? drunk during daytime. c'mon your in football." avery said.

"relax avery." JJ assured. "funny. dude championships are here. what? distracting yourselves from slutty hookups. not gonna work." avery scolded.

avery went back to school to look for someone. she went to the boys locker room and found asher.

"hey, you still here?" avery asked. "yeah getting extra practice for football. what you doing here?"

avery walked towards asher. "i'm looking for coach hanson."

"but that's your cheerleading coach you-"

"i'm back on the team." avery lightly smiled.

"you seem more bummed out than excited." asher noticed. "it's just- everyone on the team got a scholarship. they already know what college they want to go to. i'm stuck. everyone is already ahead and i haven't gave it a single thought."

"i don't even know if i wanna go back on the cheer team now." she muttered. "it is your decision. that means you should think about yourself. and high school hasn't ended yet. we got about a year or two."

"yeah thanks."

asher had called her to meet at the cafe. he was outside waiting.

"hey." avery mentioned. "why am i so nervous?" asher asked.

"it's been a year, it's ok to be nervous. c'mon." avery motioned to walk inside.

asher and his mom hugged. "you remember avery. lucy's daughter."

"oh." gwen chuckled. "right lucy, where is she anyway she hasn't answered me?"

"yeah well that'll do. she'll never answer. pretty sure she's in france so." avery answered.

"speak of the devil." she showed her phone, and it was a call from her mom.

"hello?"

"so have you thought about college?" lucy asked. "wow no hi? how are you? but yes."

"i want you to do business." avery chuckled. "funny, why are you calling? are you in beverly?"

it was silent. "what's the whole point of coming down if you're gonna scold me about everything. i don't need you, i never have. i've been doing fine since dad died. don't call or visit again."

"sorry about that." avery said. "i understand. your mom is uh a bit bitchy." gwen assured. "a bit? more like a lot."

"please sit. tell me everything." gwen said, herself and asher sitting. avery just stood there. "oh maybe i should-"

"no, no. i want you to stay." asher said. avery sat beside asher. "it's been a year mom." asher brought up.

"i know."

"so why now? what changed?" asher asked. "i wish i could tell you. but just know that i have missed you every day."

"asher mentioned you had news." avery noticing the silence. "um, jacob, my boyfriend, proposed. we're getting married."

gwen showed the ring. "asher are you gonna say anything?"

"about what? the ring?"

"jacob." gwen stated. "mom, i don't even know jacob."

"i know, but it's going to change."

"are we done here?" asher asked. "ashe-"

"look mom, you wanted to tell me your big news, and now i know." asher said. "look that's not the reason i asked you here. i can't marry jacob until your father and i are officially divorced. and harold keeps avoiding the divorce papers. i've tried to serve him 8 times but-"

avery looked at him. she scoffed at gwen. "let me guess. you want asher to convince harold to sign the divorce papers so you live your happy life of getting married."

gwen brought out the envelope. avery looked at asher and held onto his hand under the table.

"you really shouldn't be talking, since the fact you are just like lucy." gwen said. "i'm sorry?"

"you heard me." gwen stated. "we're leaving." asher annouced.
