Chapter 2 - Rise of the Batman Fan Club
*I apologize for the huge amount of typos in advance*
"Hello and welcome to Independence Day!" King Virgil spoke loudly into his microphone.
"It has been 5 years since the Virgil Empire sprung up from the ground - on this day, five years ago, we as a nation were created. And thus, I raise this glass," James raised a glass of lemonade because he's too young to drink alcohol.
Everyone cheered and applauded as he drank lemonade.
I know what you're wondering; why the heck is Virgil drinking lemonade and everyone cheering for him? I mean, sure, he is the king, but like why cheer for him when all he is doing is drinking lemonade?
The truth is, Virgil was a dictator.
If you remember, which you probably don't, the world was in ruins after World War 4.20.
All civilization had collapsed. No one had a home to go to. Everyone was hopeless.
And then, James rose from the ground (well Oliver pulled him out but whatever). And he built an empire - the ONLY empire in the world.
People originally became Virgilians because they had nowhere else to go, and stayed Virgilians because, once again, there was nowhere left to go.
And, over time, King Virgil extended his control over the people of the Virgil Empire. Before long, he was the only leader - the leader of a huge cult of Virgilians. He was an idol for everyone.
Anything he did was considered the right thing.
Life wasn't wonderful. Everyone in the kingdom except James and the Virgilian officials lived in small huts and barely survived on the rationing that Virgil provided.
Meanwhile, he himself and his government lived in a huge golden mansion and had expensive food every day.
Virgil did nothing all day and his citizens worked 12 hours every day 7 days a week to sustain the empire.
And yet everyone blindly looked up to him, trusted him, and believed in everything he said.
Well, almost everyone.
There exists one undercover group named the Dark Knights. They were named this way because I couldn't come up with anything more creative and stole it from a Superman or Batman movie that I vaguely remember watching.
Anyway, the Dark Knights were a secret society that knew Virgil held too much control. They knew he was abusing his power. They knew he was a dictator.
Most importantly, they knew that whoever betrayed Virgil would be executed.
Thus, they stayed secret.
However, here's the thing. Although it doesn't make any sense but fits the plot, Virgil and his advisers knew about the existence of the Dark Knights.
Now, now, don't worry, this isn't a political story, and I apologize for boring you with the details - but it had to be said in order to lay the groundwork for the story. As we progress through the chapters, you'll see a lot less world-building and a lot more Oliver running around with his pillows.
Anyway, back to Virgil.
As everyone cheered and applauded to his crappy one sentence toast, Virgil drank the lemonade.
