Chapter 20 - The Three Commandments
"Huh?" Chandler asked, lethargically rubbing his eyes, "Captain Stone?"
Chandler was expecting that the ringer was one of his friends, like Lucas or Derek. Lucas especially, after the whole Ethan ordeal he witnessed.
"That'd be me." she replied.
"You're the Inspector's wife, right?" he yawned, "What do you want with me?"
Alex narrowed her eyes in annoyance, "I'm not his wife. Why does everyone assume that?"
"You two live together, for god's sake. Why do you think people assume that?" Chandler sighed, "What did you have to wake me up in the middle of the night for?"
Alex straightened her collar, "I'm here to ask you a very important question. A question that would likely get me fired from the military if King Virgil heard it."
"What kind of question are we talking about?" Chandler tentatively responded, fearful but intrigued.
"The query goes as follows:" Alex said, "What do you think is the biggest problem with the Virgilian Empire?"
"Why are you asking me this?" Chandler retorted.
"Answer me, then we'll move on to other subjects."
"Okay, fine." Chandler stated as he pondered for a few seconds, "I'd have to say that the biggest problem with the Empire is its tendency to choose violence to solve its problems. We'd all be a lot better off if certain high officials dropped the whole 'kill or be killed, no mercy' mindset."
"Hmm. A logical assessment. I actually have to agree with you in some respects, that mindset really can alienate a lot of people."
Chandler quickly changed the subject of the conversation, "Okay, I answered your question, now you have to explain yourself. Why the hell are you coming into my dorm at midnight and questioning me about the Empire's flaws? What exactly are you trying to pull?"
"I'm not trying to pull anything. I just wanted to show you that we both know there's problems with the Virgilian kingdom." Alex remarked.
"But why? What do you gain from this?" Chandler queried.
"Well, I don't gain anything directly. But the Lieutenant Promotion Tourney is on right now, isn't it?"
"The tourney has nothing to do with this."
Alex's eyes suddenly dilated, gaining intensity, "Oh, but it does. Because the tourney is a way into the government. If someone like you, who knows about its flaws, joins it, you could do some real good. And I can help you get there."
Chandler was taken aback by this sentiment, "W-what exactly are you suggesting? Some kind of coup? And why are you suggesting it to me, of all people?"
Alex capitalized on Chandler's moment of insecurity and smiled, "I'm suggesting that you train under me in order to win the tournament. You're the only one here who has the capacity to question the Empire, which is why I chose you."
Chandler was not impressed, "If you really think that, then you're pretty stupid. Lots of people here realize that this life isn't all sunshine and roses."
"Really, now?" Alex contested, "I haven't seen any examples of this."
"Probably because they're afraid to give any lip to a government official."
