Chapter 6 - Devious Lick

Date: 8 years ago

Time: 6 a.m.

Location: The Motherland

"Ding ding ding!" the alarm clock rang loudly.

The 10-year-old climbed out of bed, brushed his teeth, grabbed a cracker for breakfast, ran outside, and put on some clothes.

He ran through the narrow alleys till he reached the main road. It was only 6 in the morning, so there were very few people. Additionally, it was raining. A cold, uncomfortable rain that only made the boy shiver as he crossed the bridge over the river.

He dashed across the main plaza of the village, sprinting so that the police patrolling the streets wouldn't see him.

Ten minutes later, he was finally at his destination.

The railroad station.

The boy darted behind the building. Slowing to a stop, the boy, Daniel was his name, approached the predetermined meeting place.

His best friend, Leon, was leaving for America today.

They had been friends since birth, but now his family was moving to America. They would ride the train to Kiev and then fly the rest by plane.

Daniel had come to say goodbye to Leon. They had agreed to meet at the big bush behind the station, and that's where he was waiting for Leon right now.

After a few minutes of suspense, Leon finally showed up.

"Daniel, blyattttt suka!" he exclaimed upon seeing his friend. Translation: "Daniel, you came!"

"Suka suka suka blyat," Daniel replied, smiling. Translation: "I did, I had to say goodbye to you."

Note: the word-by-word translation isn't exactly accurate, but the meaning is conveyed don't worry.

Anyway, from now on I'll just automatically translate the sentences to English (but of course they're speaking Russian in reality).

"I'm glad you could come," Leon approached Daniel slowly. Like his friend, Leon was a ten-year -old boy who was born and raised in Russia, and also like Daniel, he was completely soaked from the rain.

"So, you're leaving now, huh?" Daniel asked, looking down.

"Yeah," Leon replied, shrugging his shoulders lightly.

"I'm...I'm happy for you," Daniel said, his head still pointed down. The truth was, he hated for Leon to leave. They had been best friends their whole lives, and now Leon's family was leaving, probably forever.

They would most likely never see each other again. Daniel would never see his best friend again.

"Hey, Daniel," Leon bent down to look at his friend's face. "I don't want to leave you too. But, our parents have each other's phone numbers and we can always call!" Leon tried to cheer Daniel up, but it didn't work.

"Y...yeah," Daniel replied, turning his face away.

Leon straightened back up.

"Daniel, I want you to have this," he reached out of his pocket and took out a small object.
